Current hardware:

CPU: Intel i3-6100

GPU: AMD RX 480

Mainboard: Asus Z170 Pro gaming

PSU: bequiet pure power 9 400W

RAM: Crucial 2x8GB 2133MHz CL16

For a build from 2015 it's still running good but the CPU is struggling a lot.

I mainly intend to upgrade the CPU and keep everything else as is.

I'd like at least 4 cores.

The best options I can find for the 1151 socket are the i7-6700 or i5-7600.

But not sure how much of an upgrade that is and from there I won't have any decent upgrade path in the future.

I'm considering switching to AMD using a ASUS Prime B550M-A and Ryzen 5 3600.

Until 2021 games were running alright, not the highest FPS and resolution but I don't really need much as long as it's like 40 FPS on MEDIUM or LOW settings.

So I'm not sure if it's worth spending extra money switching to AMD or stick with intel and deal with it later.

Until you can platform upgrade leave it be as is. The 6700 or 7700 are HORRIBLE value for the money. Any i5 wont help you.

Id say save a bit more and opt for a ryzen 5600

Ram will hinder it but it will be heaps better than anything you can get on your platform. Even a 3600 is alreadt hraps better
