Hi im building a "gaming" rig for myself, but I cant chose the ram for it.

Its a dual Xeon 2696-V3 machine.

Do I get ECC memory or not ??

Ram has to be 2133 or it wont work.

Im just not sure wich will work with it.

did some research myself and lots were saying yes and lots were saying no.

Wich ones do I get ?

Consumer or Server ram ?

I would say no, unless it makes no difference in price. This is not a mission critical piece of hardware that must never crash because of a random bit flip. Better go with faster memory, rather than error correcting memory.

You dont need that many cores for gaming so im guessing you do some productivity stuff aswell, if its just gaming you should just buy a used ryzen combo instead due to better single core performance

As for rams even if you buy 2666 if the cpus dont wanna go past 2133 theyll run at 2133, usually rams have multiple spd for lower speeds so freq bin shouldnt be a real issue

As for ram choice depends on how much capacity you need, for 16gb dimms maybe something like m393a2g40eb1 or hma42gr7afr4n

id go ecc anyways since that means you can get good ics at higher densities, where youd be limited to dual sided samsung e die/hynix afr 8gb sticks you can get em in 16gb capacities in ecc form, so you can enjoy the ridicolous 2v+ voltage scaling and tight subtimings (particularly trfc) but with higher capacities and not stuck with ics like samsung d die or hynix djr that do worse trfc. Main benifit of buying ecc is price and the bonus ecc capability so even with good ics out of the equation those two points alone would sway me over to buying ecc instead of consumer dimms, besides not like youll notice the performance hit from ecc when you got 4 channels or when you start tuning em to go faster than any would be non ecc ram

Thank you for the reply but sometimes those cpus aint happy with faster ram even when its clocked down.

would be better and safer if I get 2133 and probaly cheaper.

Ill just get ecc then.

8 gig or 16 ?

8 gig is cheaper than 16 amd i probaly dont need 128 gig of ram 64 is more than any game would need

4 16 gigs or 8 8 gigs ?
