Greetings. I’ve posted in this forum because there is a new computer build sub-forum. My objective is to document my build experience for my own benefit and that of everybody else.

I’m probably way older than most computer gaming enthusiasts but I’ve been computer gaming since my teens (before there were even affordable PC parts). I haven’t built a computer in many, many years.

By way of background, my current computer is over nine years old with an Intel 4770k, 16GB Corsair DDR3, Samsung SSDs and RTX3070 (Non Ti). I’ll keep using this for office work.  The only reason the video card is semi-upgraded was because many new games wouldn’t work with the video card I originally had. I originally had this with a custom double water cooling loop, but one day a radiator sprang a leak, which went all over my entire system (nothing was damaged) and my room floor, and in my total frustration, I stripped all my water cooling parts and tossed them in the garbage (true story).

So, I plan to build a mostly gaming PC, but the computer will have plenty of horsepower for video editing.  I play Call of Duty, Battlefield, Far Cry, Forza and Microsoft Flight Simulator. Yes, some 60 year olds are gamers.  For that matter, my wife is also a gamer.

This build will feature an Intel 13900K, ASUS Z790 Strix motherboard, 64GB Corsair Dominator DDR5 7200 MHz, 4TB Samsung 990 Pro m.2, 4TB Corsair MP600 m.2, ASUS RTX4090 Strix video card, a Corsair 7000X full tower case, 1000W Corsair PSU and a Corsair H170i Capella 420mm AIO cooler.  I’m going to try to tone down the RGB (if it is even possible) but everything high end these days seems to have some form of RGB.  I’ll try to “keep the build simple.”  My wild overclocking days are over and I no longer have the patience to tinker and benchmark a computer daily.

Anyway, the first batch of components were received today. My journey begins. As Samsung’s box says: “Blistering Speed, Endless Victories.”

Cheers and best wishes.

Howdy! Welcome to the forum, glad to have you with us.

Age doesn't matter!  I daily meet people in their 50s and 60s on a game called Hell Let Loose! One of our clan members is 73 and he hops on many times a week to play some rounds! Even played through The Last Of Us Part 1 with my mother, she is 65!   Beats knitting or watching golf, thats for damn sure 😄
This is going to be a kick ass system!
Welcome back to PC building, hope you enjoy the process 🙂
Kind Regards: Hinjima.

If you need any help DM me and let me know. I have my own Mom & Pop Shop for Custom Builds if you run into any trouble.

I have been building PCs for over 30 years so if you have any questions please ask. For Future Communication I use Discord for much Faster Response Times as I have it open 24/7. I am also available if you need help before, during, or after the Build Process on Discord through Text,Voice, or Video Chat. I can be with you while you build your new PC if you need me to be. Here is my Discord: Wizardsnapper#2772

Thanks for the kind welcome

I had my first RTFM moment this morning.

I have three m.2s.  In my infinite wisdom (stupidity?) I’m trying to RAID 0 two Samsung 990s, even knowing how pointless that is because Samsungs are already blazing fast.  I also have a larger Corsair m.2 for storage.

The motherboard has five m.2 slots and brags about having a Gen 5 PCIe m.2 slot, which is meaningless because no Gen 5 PCIe m.2s are available.

What shocks me is that if I were to use the Slot 1 m.2, the first PCI-E slot for the video card drops to 8 lanes from 16 lanes.  Why then did I bother to buy a RTX 4090?  This is dumb.  So, I’m left to survive with four m.2 slots, just like every other motherboard.

Another thing. I’ve never used m.2s before, and I know RAID is governed by the Z790 chipset.  This is like the old days of the Southbridge.  I never knew that m.2 also has direct channels to the CPU.   I wonder if there is any speed advantage that is remotely perceptible.

That's only if you use gen 5. Since the 13900k has limited gen 5 lanes. The gen 4 lanes will be fine

from doing what? A RAID 0? Basically none since they're already really fast

There ARE gen5 NVMe drives:

MSI SPATIUM M570 HS

Gigabyte AORUS Gen5

Crucial T700

However, they are not yet fully utilized, just like the main PCIe slot at Gen5 speeds and there isn't any performance difference outside synthetic tests. So far only DiurectStorage API looks to be most likely to take advantage of gen5 speeds for both the NVMe and the GPU, but for it to be noticeable, we need games that are developed with DirectStorage and have massive size assets AND a GPU with gen5 interface. The RTX 5000 i rumored to launch at Gen 5, but still nothing confirmed.

I would also instantly change the Corsair H170i for Arctic Liquid Freezer II 420mm, especially for a 13900k. The LF2 420mm is THE BEST AIO on the market. It keeps the CPU cooler while at the same time running quieter than the H170i. It also in my eyes looks much better than the H170i. The 13900k is a furnace, disguised as a CPU. It's basically like trying to cool one of your hot plates on your stove.

Also also - with RTX 4090 and a CPU that can draw almost the same power as the GPU, i would really REALLY go for 1300W Platinum PSU.

| Ryzen 7 5800X3D | Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360 Rev 7| AsRock X570 Steel Legend |

| 4x16GB G.Skill Trident Z Neo 4000MHz CL16 | Sapphire Nitro+ RX 6900 XT | Seasonic Focus GX-1000|

| 512GB A-Data XPG Spectrix S40G RGB | 2TB A-Data SX8200 Pro| Phanteks Eclipse G500A |

My second shipment of parts arrived.  However, I’m considering ditching the AIO and doing proper water cooling.

I’m also reconsidering the power supply because it looks puny.

It's not puny but if you do want a higher wattage variant then try this one and it also has native pcie 5 MSI MEG Ai1300P PCIE5 1300 W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply (MEG Ai1300P PCIE5) - PCPartPicker
