Budget (including currency): ideally 2500€ max 3500€

Country: Austria / EU

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: NAS, self-hosted Cloud storage, Plex with HW transcode, Containers

Hey guys!

So i've spent the last couple of months planning and budgeting for a new NAS. This is meant as a replacement for my existing Synology DS920+ which has reached its compute and storage capacity.

The plan is to have a single system that does the following tasks:

1. Serve as a Backup-Target for my PC, Laptop and, most importantly, pictures

2. Be accessible like Synology Drive to access my files

3. Host a bada** Plex-Server (currently, the ds920 has no more than 2 concurrent streams before maxing out its - well everything, really . Simultaneous videostreams should be no less than 5, ideally more than 8

4. Host a variety of Containers/Apps.

5. Be Expandable. I am Planning on buying 4x20TB so i can add another identical vdev in the future for 8 drives in total

I am targeting 50TB+ (for now). The following list is my currently planned config, please advise what to improve/change:

CPU: Intel 12600k - €240

RAM: 64GB DDR4-3200 - €120

MB: ASRock Z690 Riptide - €180

GPU: RTX3060 - €280

Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S - €90

Case: Fractal Define R5 - €120

PSU: Seasonic Prime PX-750 - €170

HDD: 4x WD Ultrastar HC560 (20TB each) - €350 each

SSD: 1x 500GB (boot) - €40

AIC: DeLock 5x Sata 6GB/s - €60

Is that overkill, not enough, or should i replace anything?

The older Synology would go to my Dad as a backup device/Nas so no reusing the drives

i appreciate your input/help!

thanks!

Holy christ, that's a server.

More than 8 streams at once?  Someone going full illegal 🙂 I like it!

It's hugely overkill, you made a full on gaming PC.

My Plex in sig can go 5 concurrent (haven't tested more), with a Ryzen 1600 + 1050Ti.  For your spend, I  would go with actual server grade parts, otherwise you just have a gaming machine being 1% utilized.  Since it sounds like you are build a long term high capacity server.

Yeah i thought as much but i never built a NAS before.

what do you mean with server grade hardware? like a cheap xeon or epyc? or like gigabyte enterprise mainboards? i have no experience with any of that but they look very expensive.

I'd look into older Xeons and ECC memory as well as proven reliable components, if that matters to you.   A backup for pics and memories can be valuable to some.  There are a lot of server savvy folks here, they can keep the price down for you I bet.

Yeah but thats all youll get with Nvidia. You have to go Quadro for unlimited concurrent streams with NVENC.

But beyond that, this is a killer homelab starter kit even though as @Dedayog stated, you might benefit more from Xeon/Epyc.

K series CPU isn't needed.
Arc GPU might be a good option for encoding.
Fractal Define 7 can fit more drives if you plan on eventually putting in more

It's easy to patch out the limiter and have as many streams as you want.

Community solution is cool, just hope this doesnt get terminated or cause "security issue".
