Hi guys, I have a problem with my PC since I build it last november. Sometimes it freezes while I'm playing games or even while I'm simply watching youtube's videos. During all this months I wasn't able to understand what was the issue, but I tried excluding some factors. At the beginning I was using the on-board graphic but then i bought a 7850, then I changed the ram because the one I initially installed wasn't in the compability list of my motherboard, I tried another hdd with a fresh system but it didn't work. I made some researches online and someone discribes it as the "screeching of death" because the PC freezes with a looping high frequency sound and the only thing you can't do anything is press the reset button. Windows does not give any message about errors. Can you help me?

My sistem configuration:

GIGABYTE GAZ77X-UD5H

INTEL I5-3570K

KINGSTON 2x4GB 1600MHz HYPER-X

My brother's freezing was fixed by not using intel sata controllers on his motherboard, try that? Also if your ram is mismatched remove one of the sets.

It highly likely a driver issue have you check and installed all the latest drivers(not Cd drivers but fromt he websites of each company. Not using beta drivers). Which OS are you running??? Are you overclocking your Pc at all???.

Also have you check you temperatures. As you heat sink my not be cooling your cpu correctly as causing a shutdown/ crash.

i'm using windows 7 64bit, never overclocked. the temperature is ok, no higher then 70 under load. I downloaded the latest drivers from the gigabyte site and from the realtek site because I thought that the on board sound could be the issue but nothing changed. The problem is that I can't understand in which situation it freezes: sometimes I play one hour with no problems, sometimes I watch a video on youtube and freezes after 2 minutes.

Amd drivers for you Hd7850 are upto date. Double check that you motherbaord is using the right voltage for the Ram. Also you could try turning off some of the power saving features. Sometimes these can cause issues. Youtube uses adobe flash player as a plug it Could be this player that is faulty check it up to date and also try reainstiling it. Do you use any usb device? Like wireless or external hhd of keysticks???

The "screech of death" is usually the result of driver conflicts. Make sure that all of your drivers - chipset, audio, video - are up to date. Make sure that your Windows is up to date as well.

And, of course, clean the dust out of the rig and make sure all fans are working properly.

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.

HI, video cards nowadays have their own onboard audio (the HDMI out), try going to device manager and see in he properties of your graphics card see it location, should appear like this "Location: PCI bus 1, device 0, function 0", then under the system devices look for an HD audio controller that has the same location but different function like this "Location: PCI bus 1, device 0, function 1" and disable that audio device, reboot for good measure and try to play or watch youtube videos anything to force a sound/video crash (not a burn in test).

Now I'm trying using powerline for networking instead of the wifi pci card. Then I'll try disabling the video card audio device, but I've some doubt cause the problem occurred even when I was using the on-board graphic

Another thing you can try is making sure all the setting in your bios are set to the complete default, include frequencies like base clock and CPU multiplier, and make sure any auto overclocking features on your board are disabled and just make sure everything is default really, something could have gotten changed without you realising. I'm really interested to what the problem could be since I've never really ever seen these symptoms.

Could also maybe be a dead motherboard or CPU, it seems you've ruled all the other components out.

I know it is a pain to do but, have you tried a clean install of windows?.

I suggest that you check every connector in your computer and make sure that they are tightly connected, also check if there is anything (conductive) touching sensitive areas of you components, like the back of your motherboard, ram, etc.

Then use it normally, if this fails (just to give it a shot), do a clean install of windows and install the latest drivers from AMD, and from Gigabyte, (I used the sound driver directly from realtek on my integrated sound card (gigabyte motherboard), and it gave me problems).

If by any chance you already fixed this issue on your own or by any advice given by our fellow members please tells us D:!

DId you check the motherboard's Memory-QVL to see if the memory kit that you have is listed as quality assured by Gigabyte? If it is listed, then try a different version of your operating system, by the way, what is it? If the RAM is not listed then you may want to replace the ram you have installed at present to one of the listed kits on the memory-QVL. If after the prementioned is done, then check all connections to the motherboard make sure they are in properly. Do a error checking of the HDD to see if there are bad sectors. Check to see if the PSU has enough juice to run the system. Check to see if in UEFI/BIOS the the SATS settings are correct. Also check to see if the HDD you are using is listed in the devices-QVL for your motherboard.

If after all of the above mentioned is done, record a video of a boot cycle ultill the problem happens and post it for more help.

Remove overclocks

Update bios

Update drivers

Make sure the memory is running at 1600mhz

If the BSOD (blue screen of death) says anything about memory management it's a memory issue. An issue that I personally had.

Try the troubleshooting section.

Hey guys, thanks for so many ideas. I'll reply to all in a single post.
-I already changed the ram with a kit listed in the gigabyte site.
-I've already done four clean window installations (including the one using a different hard drive on my pc). I'm using windows 7 64bit and I used the same on other pcs without any problem.

-Bios, drivers and windows are up to date

-Never overclocked and never changed anything in the bios except the boot priority.
-the PSU has 600 watts so I think it's enough to power a single graphic card pc.
-I have no BSOD and no errors from windows when I press the reset button but the message that the system hasn't been shut down properly.
Next time it freezes i'l make a video and I'll post it here

Not a lot of people think about this but it could be a faulty power supply. If you can, try buying a $30 500 watt power supply to see if the issue is fixed and if it is fixed, return it and buy a new one. Or, you could take one out of an existing PC to test it.

One of the next steps was to find a PSU and test it.

I bought the HDD when i build the system, so in november more or less.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hey guys, i've been using a powerline adapter for two weeks now and I didn't had any problem. When I tried to come back to wifi the pc almost freezed after few hours. I'm pretty sure the wifi card is the problem. I'll try to switch back to powerline for a few weeks to be sure. Any suggestion on how to solve the problem? By the way the wifi adapter is a dlink dwa-556, latest drivers are installed.

  • 3 months later...

So, I'll try to reopen this topic after few months has past. The problem is still there, it may be less frequent or it may be just that I used less demanding applications recently. So to sum up:

  • I excluded incompatible ram
  • I excluded the wifi pci card both using powerline and a new wifi adapter
  • I excluded the motherboard since I changed it with an asus p8z77-v
  • I excluded video card since the problem occured also using internal graphic

I also had tried a different hdd, even if it was a 5400rpm one from a notebook, and I installed windows 7 several times. I used memtest, ibt, hd tune, crystal disk and western digital data lifeguard diagnostics and any of them showed alerts.

any idea? Please help me it's almost a year since I build the computer and the problem is there since the first days.
