I recently built a PC and just got my GPU in the mail. When I play certain graphically demanding games the screen randomly goes black, sound cuts out after a few seconds, then a few seconds later I hear a device disconnecting sound effects. All the while my fans are going full throttle, and I never get any display back until I restart the PC.

The problem occurred in two replicable scenarios those being in the latest Minecraft version with the "Rethinking Voxels" shader set to high, And in Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice with all high settings and raytracing set to very high.

I run my games at native resolution for my monitor which is 1680x1050, targeting 60 fps.

My PC specs are:

  • Windows 10 Home 64-bit (unactivated)
  • ASUS B650-Prime (latest BIOS)
  • AMD Ryzen 5 7600 (stock)
  • Stock CPU Cooler
  • 4x8GB Crucial RAM (4800MHZ)
  • RTX 3080 (HP OEM secondhand)
  • Silicon Power 2TB NVMe SSD
  • WD Blue 1TB SATA SSD
  • TP-Link Wifi card
  • 2 Apect 14 fans (Intake)
  • 1 120mm fan (Exhaust)
  • Gigabyte UD850GM

I know I can avoid the issue by lowering my graphics settings, but I was expecting more out of my 3080.

It would be greatly appreciated if anyone could point me in the right direction with this problem.

Try disconnecting and reconnecting your GPU, power cable included and make sure the latest drivers are installed. Also test if the issue also happens if you lower graphics settings to see if it happens while not pushing the GPU so hard, it could be just that the GPU got damaged in delivery or was manufactured faulty. If you can't get the problem to go away, you should return it and get a replacement if you still have warranty.

Also it doesn't seem the PC is crashing but disconnecting the GPU from Display, try connecting your monitor directly to your motherboard and see if its still in Windows Desktop.

I would try and use DDU to completely remove the GPU drivers in Safe Mode with Networking, then download and reinstall the drivers from Nvidia's website, not through GeForce Experience.

Just remember to check the box, in DDU, that stops Windows from auto re-installing a driver from the Windows servers which is stupidly outdated.

I tried this but the problem still occurs

I just wanted to update this thread.

The PC screen still goes black with the same cause and symptoms as before.

I have tried stress testing my system but it does fine in both the heaven benchmark and in some blender renders I tried out, so why it crashes in games with very high settings remains a mystery to me.

Luckily the problem doesn't occur if I turn down my settings in Hellblade, and I've resorted to using a different shader in Minecraft.
