Good Evening all,

I got a pre-built for a rediculous deal, has a ryzen 5 5500 and I upgraded the gpu to a 6700xt.

I'm not overly familiar with amd processors, will any cpu with an AM4 socket work? Or does motherboard limit choice?

Also any suggestions on a cpu that will complement the 6700xt? The 5 5500 is bottlenecking the heck out of it.

Any AM4 chip will work* so long as you have a relatively recent BIOS. The VRMs are going to be what limits what chip you'll be using. For example, an A520 board is not gonna have the VRMs for a 5950X to be able to stretch its legs.

*Some lower end boards for 5000 series removed Ryzen 1000 support due to storage limits on BIOS chips, and there are technically A-series chips that will go in an AM4 socket that I have yet to see a modern board have support for.

Just now, tkitch said:

it should support a R7 or R9, albeit with potentially needing a better cooler.  (Hotter chips)

but you didn't say:  What is your performance being limited in?  What do you expect to get out of the upgrade?

I'm looking to get a sustained 140 fps at 1440p in modern warfare 2, ultra settings, currently it maxes out at about 100

It could work but if you got a nice cooler on the prebuilt you can turn on PBO which should help to eek out few more framerate, at least a more consistent frame times. Also, ultra settings sucks in MW2 in terms of spotting anyway.

Have you tried running the game benchmark? What's the average fps?

I'm not sure if there have been big performance increases with recent driver updates but 100 fps with a 6700 xt doesn't seem far off from the 110 fps shown here with a 5800x3d: https://youtu.be/SpGT3PTEegA?t=26
