Hello LTT forum members. I have a question.

Would it be possible to run some linux distros in a window within windows?

I don't feel like dual booting and i would like to see if there are any options like this.

To clarify. Is there any way of running linux in windows as if it was a .exe file?

So i could resize the window and minimize/maximize it too? And close it down when i get bored.

I'd like to try out some various versions of linux before my inspiron 7737 arrives.

I plan to run linux on my Hp G62-453TU after that but i'd like to try them out on my desktop first.

I apologize if there already is a post like this.

Virtualbox is the only free and good solution. Will work just fine for what you plan on doing.

I do know about VirtualBox, which is good and might do the trick, but I always used VMWare and it worked flawlessly. (sidenote, VMware is paid software, while VirtualBox (by Oracle) is freeware)

I wish you good luck, and if any question should come to your mind about VirtualBox, there are a lot of forums for it.

And as @Damikiller37 said, you will be fine with VirualBox I guess ;)

Hope this helped.

EDIT: the paid VMWare software I used was "VMWare Workstation 8"

That French guy who lives in the Netherlands and speaks German.

I've never worked with VM's and can't tell you where to go for that. Sorry.

No worries^^ some prismatic shades came to my rescue

I'll check it out^^ thanks.

Now. If any of you have any linux distros to suggest i'd love to hear it.

Going to try out mint and robolinux. But i would like to try out some other flavours too

I'll try out Virtualbox^^ It doesn't really feel right to get some paid software to try out open source software ;)

Yeah^^ I remember reading your iSwitched (And i think i might even have commented)

Downloading both of them right now and i think i might start with Elementary. Since it looks fairly familiar.

Downloading Virtualbox was quick and painless and the install was quick. So far so good

Hellooo from the elementary OS  ;)

Took a while to get the Virtualbox software to realize that this was in fact a 64bit platform.

But now it's working pretty well. With the slight lag that damikiller mentioned though. And only the US keyboard layout.
It looks really clean and it's fairly intuitive. (The x button on the windows on the left confuses me though)

Going to play around with this for a short while before i try out fedora :)

Edit:

Now im on fedora.. I can scroll with the mousewheel in this one. But it doesn't seem like it likes being run in a VM.. It's lagging quite a bit. But other than that it works.

I'll be trying out Ubuntu,Xubuntu and Lubuntu tomorrow. And mint of course.

This VM stuff is pretty cool. I'll definately play with this some more :D
