Hi,

I'm looking for a Linux O/S that is as responsive as Windows?

Currently I've got Linux Mint and I dont know why but it just doesn't seem as responsive as Windows ... Maybe this could be my hard-drive, or my hardware or me been using Windows for all my life lol

So when I click on an action e.g. Google Chrome, and when I do tasks such as moving tabs around it seems like I'm using Windows best performance mode in XP lol.

I'm not looking for a Windows experience in Linux, i'm just looking for an O/S that is fast and responsive, fast I know most Linux O/S's are but responsive is where i'm struggling

Most of the tasks I do nowadays are pretty much in the web browser really, for storage I use Dropbox and got another local Linux file server as backup (want linux so can easily write script to do automatic backups), for office suite I just use Google Docs as it does everything I need so pretty much everything is in the browser so the O/S isn't a huge deal for me.

Yes I play games but the games I do play I got to work with Wine on Linux Mint so they work, (the others don't care about lol)

So any recommendations? Something that is fast and responsive? I've done some research on Fedora it seems quite neat is that a good o/s?

Grammar nazis are people too!
Treat your local grammar nazi nicely and he might teach you a thing or two. (Note that I'm Belgian and not a native English speaker.)

The unity desktop doesn't look to be that responsive, I've tried it in a virtual environment and it always seemed to be slower than Linux Mint was in responsiveness ...

The responsiveness is a known Linux problem as far as I know. It's not something people focus on as it's very minimal but it's something that's just going to be around for a long time I suspect.

Case: Meatbag, humanoid - APU: Human Brain version 1.53 (stock clock) - Storage: 100TB SND (Squishy Neuron Drive) - PSU: a combined 500W of Mitochondrial cells - Optical Drives: 2 Oculi, with corrective lenses.

Arch if you have a clue, Linux Mint if you don't. That's pretty much as good as it's gonna get. I think you might be looking at a hardware / compatibility problem though because I'd definitely not call Linux Mint less responsive than Windows. What version are you running, Cinnamon or Mate?

I'm using Cinnamon, and tbh when i Virtualized linux Mint it was a lot faster in the virtual environment lol

Mostly it comes down to what desktop environment  you like.

http://www.techradar.com/news/software/operating-systems/best-linux-desktop-which-is-ideal-for-you--1194516

Some are lighter and faster like xfce, but mostly they are all pretty fast and responsive.

But cinnamon in my exprience is a bit slow some times, but it's getting better and faster.

I use mostly KDE now days, it is the most complete gui oriented environment for linux.

I tried mint 16 cinnamom the other day and I im pretty happy with it so far.

I definitely find it to be more responsive than win vista which was running before.

LXDE, Xfce, and MATE are on the lighter side compared to Unity, Gnome, KDE or Cinnamon. If you want to go ever lighter then use a window manager instead of a desktop environment to reduce the RAM usage below 100MB. Other thing such as using a kernel optimized for your CPU.

I second this. As far as window managers (WMs) go, Openbox seems to be the best-regarded.

@|11h What specs do you have? Your storage solution and amount of RAM/CPU horsepower are really important to fixing your problem. If you don't like Mint, you could try ElementaryOS (similar beginner-friendly approach), but anything based on XFCE, LXDE, or a standalone WM should be light enough to run well.

My Specs Are:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1100T

RAM: 8GB of Corsair RAM (Cause of motherboard being max 8GB)

HDD: 1TB Western Digital Black (Sata II, but i know that doesn't matter)

GPU: nVidia 560Ti

I have a great experience on Windows for first 6 months then it goes slow cause I cba doing disk defrag I am lazy lol

But I just dont know it seems to me Linux Mint is slower in responsiveness to Windows 7 ...

any ideas why?

I use Linux the Red Hat version at school and that is fast enough I guess and happy using that and even though I have a choice with Windows / Linux I prefer Linux

But at home I would rather use Windows even though it's slow and I cba re-installing Windows

The other reason why I want to use Linux is cause it's a lot easier for me to write scripts to do normal tasks

Try Manjaro? I believe it's a nice mix of Debian and Mint but it's a rather new one, or you could try SteamOS it does have a desktop mode and would be a bit more optimal for gaming as if the game works in Linux you could just switch to the default STEAMOS steam client instead of emulating windows where possible eg boot up and run straight into aspecific game if you ever have one in mind.

Yeah I know that's what I mean, I've got a pretty good machine yet Linux isn't giving me a good experience

So I did another test and counted which was faster, and it did seem Windows was a "little" slower but with Windows the overall experience is just better, the responsiveness, the feedback from O/S, the experience

It's just so hard to explain, I have nothing against Windows or Linux, I just want to use Linux just because I have some scripts that do most tasks I want to, it's harder on Windows (it is possible just not as simple as using the Terminal (this is my opinion))

And I use Google Chrome, on Linux it seems like i'm using the 1st version of Google Chrome that was released lol.

I use Google Chrome just cause i got everything saved there, all my bookmarks, all my settings, my extensions, just log in they all collaborate and i'm on my way with my settings

I like Xubuntu for it's styles, the way the window glows and the different styles it has, but i'm having the same problem, it's just the experience that i'm getting from the O/S ...

will try out Manjaro that seems to be a cool O/S
