PC upgrade

Budget (including currency): EUR: cheaper is always better but there is basically no limit. I want to upgrade to parts that make sense and are not overpriced.

Country: Germany

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:

  • 4k games on 120hz TV
  • VR with the Valve Index
  • Game and Web Development with many running containers via Docker and k8s

Other details

Displays:

  • 1080p 32:9 144hz (main monitor for gaming)
  • 1440p 21:9 60hz
  • 1080p 16:9 60hz vertical
  • 4k 16:9 120hz (TV - only connected when playing on the couch)

Current parts:

  • Asus z390-F
  • 8700k
  • Corsair 150i
  • MSI 2070 Armor 8GB OC
  • 4x8GB Corsair Vengeance 3200Mhz
  • Firecuda 530 2TB
  • 650W PSU
  • Coolermaster C700P

planned upgrade:

  • Asus z790 Hero
  • 13900K
  • Asus 4080 Rog Strix OC
  • 2x16GB Corsair Dominator 6600Mhz
  • Asus Thor 1200W P2

Additional Information:

  • The upgrade should last at least 5 years before i have to upgrade anything for gaming.
  • Upgrading the GPU isn't too urgent, since I don't game with 4k too often for now. For my other tasks, I still manage quite well with the 2070. Therefore, I was wondering if it makes sense to at least wait for the 4080 Ti, since it will probably last longer. The 4090 is too expensive for me and also too high in terms of power consumption.
  • I currently have an HDMI 2.1 cable running across the room to the TV. To switch between tabletop gaming and couch/TV gaming, I currently have to awkwardly reconnect an HDMI cable. Are there any good hardware solutions for this?

You're set on super expensive parts, you can get same performance and quality for less :

You could get a 13700k or even a 13600K it'll make 0 difference for your use case but it's cheaper, easier to cool and eats less power (in Germany that's a real problem, thanks Die Grünen 😛 !)

Noone needs a f***g 600EUR board neither, and the Strix 4080 isn't worth the additional 200EUR or so

Best RAM for Intel is the GSkill Neo

I'd suggest this "optimized" build, around 500EUR less than yours :

Yep fully agree with PDifolco above, don't overpay for motherboard and cpu. Sure 13900k is nice but in real world day to day, a 13600/700k is exactly the same. You can even tune the 6000 CL32 memory down to CL30 and gain a little extra performance for 0 cost.

7800x3d - RTX 4090 FE - 64GB-6000C30 - 2x2TB 990 Pro - 4K 144HZ

AFAIK the Neo Z5 can even be OCed to 7000 or so ...

I chose the more expensive 13900k because I often have up to two dedicated servers running on my PC for testing things locally hosted with other players on it. This also saves me rental costs for a server at this point. Also the requirements will increase rather than decrease in the next few years so i want to be on the save side.

I'm still thinking a 13700K with 8P+8E will do the trick as well for less

Or else go 7950X, this one has enough cores for years to come

  • 2x16GB Corsair Dominator 6600Mhz
  • Asus Thor 1200W P2

The irony

I mean the 13900k has its uses but all the others are just overpriced trash that dont actually do anything for performance

If you really want an oc board get a z6/790 dark otherwise save your money and go for a <250€ board

corsair dominator are overpriced crap aswell and >6000 xmp wont work reliably so you are better off with a 5600c30/6000c32 a die kit and overclock to 8000+ or as high your mobo/imc allows you to go. Even then you should prefer ddr4 as the performance hit is insignificant and rectifiable by just overclocking, not to mention being able to run high capacity 64/128gb setups at proper speeds (~4000) not stuck at <6000 like ddr5

And asus psus just overpriced rebranded crap, better off getting a cheaper 1200w unit around 200€

8000+ if hynix a die and you have a good imc + board, ~7000 is hynix m die and those have already been discontinued iirc so most newer 5600c30/6000c32 kits will have hynix a dies instead

and no the ram heatspreader design does not contribute to speed

Just a 13700f thingy with 64gb of ddr4

If power efficiency is what you want then have a look at ryzen with the 7900 and 7950x

I fully understand that some of the components are overpriced performance wise. Maybe i should have said more clearly that i dont 100% commit to performance vs price when it comes to RGB. Ofc the corsair dominator is pricy compared to any comparable ram especially if you compare it to ddr4 non rgb like you did. I also dont see the point in buying ddr4 ram now which i will most likely not be able to use again for my next upgrade in 5+ years.

I see that point, 6600 is therefore useless and i could just use a cheaper version with less MHz and also less latency from what i saw.

If you are not willing to overclock that 6000c32 a die ddr5 to 8000+ later when those speeds are needed there is absolutely no point in buying ddr5 cuase youll have to replace it anyways (if you are unwilling to overclock)
