That's genuinely not enough to do much of anything with. Start setting money aside. You are going to need ~$300 to begin to think about upgrading to anything worthwhile.

I don't think 120 bucks will get you very far, considering a PC fan these days can cost 40 bucks. You're going to want a complete platform upgrade: RAM+MB+CPU, but each item alone will probably be $100 each at the lowest bargain bin before considering 2nd hand hardware

Specs:

  • 5950X -30 all core curve, +200 Mhz offset
  • H150i 360mm AIO
  • Asus X570 Dark Hero
  • 4x8GB DDR4 3600 CL14
  • Asus Strix OC 3080 Ti
  • EVGA 1600G+
  • 13xAL120 V2 Uni fans

cant i upgrade the motherboard with that money?

It's not as simple as upgrading the motherboard. You are talking about moving to a new platform entirely. You will need to upgrade the CPU, Motherboard, and RAM all at the same time. Current products are not compatible with your hardware.

At that budget you're in the territory of buying used stuff, and selling the extras. You could actually get some improvement that way, for example I found a "beginner PC" on local Facebook for $200 with a Ryzen3 3100 and RX 550, you could probably get like $50-100 for yours and buy something like that.

This would amount to essentially a side to downgrade from a an FX 8320 + 970.

The Ryzen should be quite a bit better according to benchmarks. Like double. Plus then you have an AM4 platform, can sell that CPU and get something much better once you have some more money, etc.

I fail to understand how this helps @Wessel Sub with their stated use cases.

You fail to see how doubling your processor performance would help with gaming and streaming?

No. Not when "doubling your processor performance" comes at the hit of selling the GTX 970 for the substantially worse RX 550. Seeing how OP is most concerned with gaming and streaming, the focus should be on improving the GPU for both game performance as well as NVENC encoding.

.... you keep the 970 and sell the RX550......

The specifics aren't the point here. The point is to buy what you can used, sell anything extra. When budget is low it's all you can do.

I mean... I guess? This is predicated on the idea that OP would be able to find someone wants to purchase a AMD FX platform along with a RX 550. I guess it's technically an upgrade with a path forward, I'm just not sure how worth it is over saving your pennies for a few months and doing a full upgrade.
