Hey guys, so I recently got my first gaming PC and its specs are:

CPU: Ryzen 5 2600

MB: ASUS PRIME A320M-K

GPU: GIGABYTE GeForce® GTX 1080 Ti Gaming OC 11G (the white one idk lol)

RAM: GSkill Value RAM 2x8GB @3000MHz

PSU: Chieftec GPS-700A8

I started hearing weird noises while playing more intensive games and after doing a bit of research, I found out this noise is called Coil Whine. I tested different workloads and I am sure it's the GPU thats producing it. I also noticed a white LED flashing sometimes when doing GPU intensive tasks, and I found out that light means the power supply is not supplying a stable output of power to the Graphics card (correct me if I am wrong). I also didnt see many reports of this GPU having coil whine problems on the internet, so my guess is that the PSU is the problem here (which is also a very low tier in PSU tier list), I just need your confirmation, is it the PSU?

P.S. I didnt build the PC, I just got a great deal on it.

No one can really give you 100% confirmation on this. But it is known that PSU quality can affect coil whine, as you already stated.

But you might change your PSU and it won't fix the issue. Maybe you got some partially defective parts on your GPU, that are causing the coil whine or the parts have degraded over time.

The best test would be to use the GPU in a friends PC with a better PSU. If you can't do that, you can omly really speculate.

Well its either your GPU or PSU. I'm gonna go ahead and say it's your PSU. That PSU, it kind of trash and you should've avoided it at all costs. I would just throw it away and replace it with something more reliable anyway, but if you really need to make sure it's coming from the PSU, then put it slightalway further away from the rest of your chassis and connect your parts and then you can get close and listen to it.

Ty for your response, I already know the GPU is making the noise, but I am very sure it is because of the PSU not providing stable power to it

Gpu coil whine is normal in that some cards have it. I doubt your psu will change that - it could if you get lucky and the voltages are different enough to change the vibration frequency of the card coils. But you should still replace the psu because that thing is a ticking timebomb for taking out the system.

For reference, I have a 4 year old (to me, bought used) gtx 1080 that has had coil whine its entire life. Works flawlessly and OCs decently. But always whines on a heavy load.

Coil whine is due to microvibrations from the inductor coils on the graphics card's PCB. The electricity goes through several stages prior, so I doubt that it has anything to do with the PSU.

You can always check a PSU's voltage with a multimeter if you're unsure.

Thanks for the response, I am already planning to change it, but I have no idea for a replacement and I want to get a decent one this time. Can you help me out finding one? I will use these websites which are from my country https://darwin.md/ and https://enter.online/

This unit is great: https://darwin.md/seasonic-focus-px-750-platinum-ssr-750px.html

if above too expensive, this is good: https://darwin.md/sursa-de-alimentare-seasonic-b12-bc-850-850-w-black.html

basically any seasonic unit is going to be good. They don’t make crappy psus. It’s just a matter of features and efficiency.
