Budget (including currency): ~$900 USD (not including tax)

Country: US

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Mainly schoolwork with some gaming on the side. Currently genshin impact would be the most graphically intensive one, but it should handle whatever games my siblings might want to play in the next 5-10 years.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Already have a monitor (1080p, 144hz) and mouse/keyboard. No other peripherals are necessary. Upgrading from a pretty slow laptop for my family, buying from amazon primarily.

- Should have wifi connectivity

- Ideally quiet most of the time

- RGB ram can be taken out for a cheaper one for more performance in the cpu/gpu lol

Specific questions:

- Should I swap out the 3060 for a more powerful CPU? (don't have any experience balancing these 2 units)

- Is the current PSU too overkill?

- Is this build relatively future proof?

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GBLxyK

Thank you :D

Thank you 😄

I'd say the PSU is overkill, I use the same in my 7700x - 32GB - RTX 4080.  it IS however one of my favorite PSU's due to how quiet, efficient and how reliable it is, used it in over 15 builds ( 750-850x ) and the 10 year warranty is always nice.
The build is 'future proof' in that you can put a 5800X3D CPU in the system later and upgrade the GPU to something more powerful, but you are locked to the last gen AM4 platform ( 5800X3D is still killer for gaming! ) The 750w PSU will be nice to have when that time comes 🙂

12600k + 6800xt + 32gb 3200c16

used gpu make sure you can return incase faulty

50$ 850w gold as a placeholder, buy a used 700-850w gold psu, basically no risk and you get 50%+ discounts over new, there are no psu options below 80$ so you are forced to go used, prefer psus less than 7 years old as psus only last 10-15 years, you can look for used psus on local classifieds sites like fb marketplace, gumtree, craigslist, etc.

Case wise i would also reccomend going used, office cases are 5$ or free if you dumpster dive but budget (assuming used psu) allows a 20-30$ case so you can get something better with mesh/perforated front

This is pretty much the absolute highest spec you can go in this budget and will absolutely last long enough for your siblings, and the 6800xt will be more than enough for any game you throw at it, best you can do new would be some crappy 5600 + 6700xt which is clearly worse in both cpu and gpu

Its choice based

You want a significantly slower 5600 + 6700xt or you want an actually fast 12600k + 6800xt with the only caveat being having to put effort into finding used parts

The former is for lazy bois and overly scared ppl, the latter is for ballers that want to put abit more effort for massive gains

Could problably do a mix of both with a 5600 + used 6800xt build, obviously not viable for scaredy cats that think used will insta die on them but absolutely viable for the lazy bois since 6800xt listings are everywhere on ebay and you get buyer protection

Yes agreed it's a choice.  A choice to get a new psu that's never been used or to purchase a used psu with no knowledge of the psu's history. When a psu goes chances are it's going to take components with it.  The OP will use their PC for school work and to play Genshin Impact on a 1080P monitor.

3 psus so far with absolutely no issues

A 12 year old 450w and 2 other 550w and 700w

also the chance isnt that high unless were talking power surge from lightning, i literally had a shit chinese 600w blow up on me (those unbranded aliexpress psus) and it took none of my hardware with it, and yes its the dramatic kind of blow up with sparks and everything not just a silent death where it stops working for no apparent reason

And btw you do realise with how shit new psu prices are you can only get some shit raidmax 700w for 50$ but used you can get quality 850w gold units, maybe some thermaltake gf or corsair rm or something like that. Now compare those two psu options at the same price and evaluate which one will have less risk
