Hi Folks

Disclaimer: I'm new to this site and never built any computer before

I'm confused about what to pick when it comes to CPU, I'm not a heavy gamer but do play games occasionally. Having said that I do use my computer for my learning purpose such as Oracle Database and Android app development and similar stuff, you get the point I'm kind of a software developer.

I have never used AMD based computer before, I was thinking to build a computer with AMD FX 6300 and overclock it to 4.3GHZ. Some of my PC spec are mentioned below, (although I haven't bought any of those parts yet but would be buying it very soon after getting some good advise and research).

Radeon 270x 4gb DDR graphic card

16GB DDR3 RAM

600W PSU

MSI 970A-G46 motherboard

My confusion is should i go for Intel 4670k or AMD 6300 (six core) or AMD 8320 or any other that you people would advise me to buy?

please feel free to leave your comments as I can stretch my budget to build a computer that last a good few years, please also note that I'm not a fanboy of intel or AMD i need best bang for my buck.

Thanks for reading this giving your time

Regards

Sharif

Welcome and just to let you know if you didn't that board and the i5 aren't compatible

and if you have the money i would get the i5-4690k when it comes out with a Z97 board

but what is your budget for the cpu and board?

Save your self some money and go with a 2GB 270X and 8GB's of ram, unless you want to do some video editing/CAD/RAMDisk/VM. And try to get a 8320, the price equivalent to the 6300 is the I3 and you can't OC an i3 at all and the 6300 is much faster but, for around $20-$30 more you can get an 8320 and be good for a long while on CPU horse power.

Always go Intel for gaming if you can afford it.

If you go AMD, you'll need to overclock the poop out of your CPU to get something close to Intel performance (right now anyways. supposedly AMD is going to be focusing on single-core performance in future revisions to their enthusiast CPU's).

If you have to go AMD due to budgeting, try to at least get an 8320 or an 8350.

Get the 4670k and a nice z87 motherboard, just my two cents.

@sh4rif - Asking this question will yield you the same results as asking questions such as "What is the meaning of life?", "Is there a God?", or "How are babies made?" - Just kidding about the last one, I'm sure you understand what I mean though.

The reason for that is because they are both very good in their own ways. They both have different strengths; and as everything else, different weaknesses.

There are SO many different variables to take into account, and even once you have all your ducks in a row such as if you want one that runs cooler, or if you want it for a certain game.

So, all you're going to get out of us are our own opinions - usually a bit biased to say the least. However, depending on your particular usage and what you're expecting out of it, it is true that one can be better than the other for your specific needs; and for us to figure out and assist you with which that might be, we will need more detailed info. As much as you can provide. For example, what exactly are you wanting out of your CPU? What budget? Particular programs/games you're interested in? Etcetc.

Get Intel 4670k. It will be good as in gaming as in other things you mentioned. It got strong cores, while AMD got more but weak cores, plus old architecure (32nm), consumes more power, is hot, needs very good cooler to overclock otherwise it's very weak & still can't reach the Intel.

It all depends on which is your higher priority. Do you want to have higher performance at a higher price, or great performance at a decent price? Both are comparable but, Intel will always have better performance. However, Intel CPU's are more expensive. AMD has the better performance for dollar value. Hopefully that makes sense.

Bottom line is, You won't be disappointed either way. But, if you're on a tight budget, go with the AMD. If you want better performance, go Intel.

Thank you very much everyone

I really appreciate your efforts and would like to help me more on this... as some of the people were saying if I'm building a budget PC or not as i said earlier I can go either way AMD or Intel not really worried about spending some extra money on good motherboard and processor. Therefore the budget option is not even to be considered here. As i said I'm going to use this for gaming and performance. According to most of you who advised me Intel is better choise, but would love to know a few more advises then i'll come to motherboard and graphic card

Thanks
