If a psu only has a 4pin in this day and age it has to be ancient and or garbage.

What are the specs you are looking at buying that is what will decide the psu not a motherboard.

It’s a core i3-12100

The power supply is reused from one of my older pcs, apparently it still works, he just doesn’t need a GPU so yeah

The motherboard happens to have 8 pin power for the cpu, the question I’m asking is should I populated it all or I only need to populate 4 of them?

so you are worried about gaming performance on integrated graphics?
the 4 pin would work I think, keep in mind even though its a 12100, it's max power profile is about 90w. this would exceed a 4 pin cpu rating, but you can get at least 30w from the 24pin so it works out.

He’s using it for studying primarily and playing very basic retro games, so for me I think iGPU is enough for him.
