I'm planning on getting an RX 6600 XT as I found a pretty good deal on newegg for an MSI one. I've been stumped for a bit because I don't know what CPU I should pair it with. I heard the r5 3600 won't bottleneck it, but I also have seen some people have had bottleneck. I also thought about a r5 5500, but I might as well go for a r5 5600 instead. I would like to hear recommendations on what I should pair it with.

does your budget allow for the 5600? Then go for it. I think the 5600 can hold up to a 6950 xt (not at 1080p but 1440p but still)

I would get the 3600 if you looking for some more budget. Or the 5500 since its essentially a 3600 with pbo2

The 5500 is on average about 40 bucks cheaper than the 5600 but is also slightly worse

It entirely depends on the games you're playing. At any point you'll have a CPU, GPU, or engine limit. Ideally every scenario is GPU limited since the latter two are usually due to poor optimization and hardware utilization, but plenty of games will be CPU bottlenecked with a 7950x3D or 13900k even with a 6600 XT.

I made this thread to demonstrate how bad it can be in an extremely optimized game with the most GPU limited scenario possible. It entirely depends on what games we're talking about and even what scenarios in those games. Generally though, a 'balanced' approach prevents any disproportional compromise that would otherwise leave GPU performance on the table, but someone primarily playing WoW would be better off buying the best CPU they can, as example.

Something will always be the reason that your PC isn't performing faster. So I would worry less about a bottleneck and more about the actual performance you're looking for.

So if the GPU you are looking at is able to run a game you want to be able to play at x FPS, and the CPU can run it at y FPS, then you can just ask yourself if the performance of x or y (whichever is smaller) is good enough for you. If no, you can upgrade whichever of those is smaller, until you are happy with the results.

That being said, most CPUs are currently fast enough unless you want to go into high FPS gaming. So getting a 5600 is def. a good buy, but the other CPUs will also perform solidly for you.

CPU bottlenecking is rarely a problem in practical builds. Unless you're playing esports titles at 400 fps with a 4090, anything from the last 3 generations of higher entry level CPUs (i3/R3, not Celeron/Athlon) is probably enough. You won't be CPU bound with an RX 6600 XT if you're buying a CPU younger than 5 years old.

edit: that's if your use case is gaming. Chromium compilation will always be CPU limited. 🙂

If you already have a 3600 just stick with it

Otherwise get a 5500 since the 5600 is almost always >20$ more and you can make up for the performance deficit by just clocking the 5500 to 4.7-4.8 allcore and the rams as close to 1:1 fclk (5000 ddr4) as possible

yeah but you can overclock a 3600 too and get inbetween 5500 and 5600.
