GPU without a fan?

Before the pitchforks come out, or I'm called an idiot, let me explain!

The use case is in a home (game) server - I just need a GPU because the ryzen 2600 I use as CPU doesn't have one onboard.

The card in question is a xfx 9600 gt with just the (dead) fan removed - ie the heatsink on and de-shrouded.

The case is, of course ventilated.

Thanks for your tips! 🙏

If you got enough airflow, then it should be fine. Also 9600GT has a max core temp of 105C. It'll shot down if it gets too hot, so don't worry.

Might work but I doubt it. There are fanless low powered GPUs out there specifically for this.

it will be fine, you will probably notice 50-60 deg temps but it will drastically drop with no display plugged in because the card will go into a low power state.
Meaning literally unplug the cable from the card when you do not need it.
I assume you are just remotely connecting into the box with like ssh or vnc or something? no need for a monitor anyway

Thanks everyone for their input! 🙏

I didn't dare to go full "nude" so I zip tied a 80 mm 12 V case fan onto it. Unfortunately the MB has only 2 fan headers so I had to power this one with a molex adapter that only gives me 5 V for quite low rpm - not really much help, but better than nothing, I guess!?

Anyway, it works fine - temps are a little high for my taste (low 80s while working with multiple apps like browser, terminal, text editor...) but they are stable. And they go down when the screen timeout kicks in.

It's a game server btw, running ARK:Survival evolved

Cheers!
