Thank you I will pick up a 6950 xt and a better PSU like a Silverstone. I'm going to check on PcPartPicker to see how many watts it will draw and get a psu according too that taking into account spikes.

Also, consider Corsair Rmx series and Seasonic.

Better VRM designs (see New World blowing up 3080s/3090s) and no memory temp issues since supposedly GDDR6X can degrade overtime at the temps 3080s/3090s run at. I'd trust a mining 6950 XT, not a mining 3080, and I would assume that any used 3080 is probably an ex-mining card.

Software wise, yeah AMD GPUs have been a bit of a mess until recently. Actual build quality wise, they've been pretty good outside the reference cards and some Gigabyte cards from the Polaris era.

I had the same question/dilemma a while ago and I chose the 3080 10gb (I was looking at used cards).   In my region, the 6950 XT has come down in price and for some reason, used card sellers are asking the same price or even more (than retail) for 6950 XT cards.   I haven't inquired to any of these sellers whether they'd 'go down' in price.  🙂

Why did I chose a 3080 10gb card?   A) there were few 3080 Ti cards being sold at the time and sellers wanted '3090 prices' and there were few 3080 12gb cards being sold - the few that were available - were either too far geographically or were snatched up before I could arrange/negotiate to final sale.   Remember, I was on the fence between the two cards.   I wanted the 6950 XT being a 50/50 Linux user.    However, the final 'scenario' that influenced me towards the Nvidia card was CUDA/3D productivity - e.g. Blender, video editing etc.   The RX 6950 XT kinda sucks in that - the 'content creation' scores were really poor and wanting.   So, yeah, if you are gaming ONLY - the AMD card is a good choice to pick over a 3080 - but, only if you just game.   I found the AMD 6950 XT performance (scores) to be really disappointing in everything else.    Also, its high power consumption is not impressive.   The 3080 is a bit high and the 3090 is high - but, again, the 6950 XT card is more known for the high power consumption, isn't it?   I got an Asus Tuf gaming card and it runs cool and quiet - ppl who told me it would were right on the money.

I really wanted any good reason to get a 6950 XT but the 'good for mostly gaming' wasn't enough or sufficient.

6950 XT if 'only will use it for gaming' - it's safe to pick the AMD card if that is your user case.   I would try to find a Sapphire, Powercolor or Asus card.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X 3.4 GHz 8-Core Processor  ($191.99 @ Amazon)
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D12L 60.09 CFM CPU Cooler  ($98.50 @ Newegg Sellers)
Motherboard: Asus PRIME B550M-A WIFI II Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($139.99 @ Amazon)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory  ($64.98 @ Amazon)
Storage: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 3.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive  ($129.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Western Digital Blue 2 TB 3.5" 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($49.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card: Gainward NE6306T019P2-190AB GeForce RTX 3060 Ti LHR 8 GB Video Card  ($400.00)
Case: Zalman T6 ATX Mid Tower Case  ($54.99 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: Apevia Prestige 600 W 80+ Gold Certified ATX Power Supply  ($30.00)
Monitor: Sceptre E275B-QPT168 27.0" 2560 x 1440 165 Hz Monitor  ($100.00)

I'm thinking about getting the rtx 3080 10gb used or the 6950xt used which one should I get for better price to performance and future proofing and good features.

6950 XT. The 3080 only has an advantage with CUDA/AI support, for most everything else the 6950 XT is just faster as well as being more reliable. If you just game, it's the clear choice.

What does ssd 6950xt mean

i think he meant 6950XT. And if youre going used anyway, 6900XT can be had for cheaper on used market and itll be the same performance once you increase the power limit on it.

I agree with the 6950xt recommendation. But how is it more reliable? If anything, haven't AMD gpu's been LESS reliable than Nvidia over the years? 🤨

Quote so we get a notification, I came back for other reasons and just happened to see this.

For the most part, I would want a higher end PSU for a 6950 XT than the 3080, though not by all that much. For ray tracing capability, having used a 6900 XT and a 3080, when both were overclocked they performed within 5% of each other in RT titles like Control and in benchmarks like Port Royal. The 3080 was technically faster in those, but not enough to actually matter considering how much it wins in everything else. The 6950 XT is just a pre-overclocked 6900 XT, so the numbers should line up pretty evenly.

As for the Nvidia feature set, he only things I'm aware of that Nvidia has that AMD doesn't is CUDA, DLSS 3, and video upscaling, the latter two I'd be very surprised if they weren't added to the AMD driver within the next couple months. AMD has equivalents from most of Nvidia's features, FSR 2.0 vs. DLSS 2.0 being basically identical in everything but Spiderman Remastered, Noise Suppression on AMD vs. RTX Voice on Nvidia, ReLive on AMD vs. Shadowplay on Nvidia, etc. Basically if you don't need CUDA you should be fine with the AMD card, and given you say you will only use it for gaming I'm gonna assume you don't actually need CUDA support (it's used for accelerating rendering, machine learning, and some other workstation type tasks, not games).

Thank you I will pick up a 6950 xt and a better PSU like a Silverstone. I'm going to check on PcPartPicker to see how many watts it will draw and get a psu according too that taking into account spikes.

3080 vs 6950XT is really one-sided. 6950XT for sure. Not only does it have much more VRAM, but it's actually a class above and is fighting against the 3090, not the 3080.

I am looking at a asrock 6900xt

ASRock cards are fine, the OC Formula is arguably the best 6900 XT you can find. If it's a good price, I'd go for it. Just make sure it's not a reference card and you're OK, something like the Phantom Gaming or Taichi would do great.
