New build, need dynamic range compression

I've got a semi new build where my old machine I used the built in loudness equalization. For whatever reason this motherboard doesn't have it so many things are way too loud or way too quiet. So, I'm looking for a new way to do dynamic range compression I've downloaded equalizer APO + peace. But I don't know much about sound in general and the sliders are a little intimidating. Should I get a sound card or external DAC to try and tackle this problem, other recommendations?
