My HP G61 laptop recently decided it should break.
Getting to the boot sequence takes a really long time, the laptop just sits there powered on and HDD and fan running but the screen stays off. After a while, like 10 minutes or so It finally boots.
The bios and Windows system restore works but actually loading windows is impossible. When the 'Windows is loading' screen appears it almost immediately gives a BSOD but only for a split second.

This is the BSOD I get, didn't catch it all it's just to quick.

I googled the code and it said it was some kind of HDD problem so i swapped the HDD with another one, Windows 7 was also installed on that one, and it gave another BSOD at the same moment during boot.

I opend the compleed laptop and there aren't any loose cables or something like that, it looks like it should be working 100%.

STOP 0x0000007B Error Messages

The STOP 0x0000007B error will always appear on a STOP message, more commonly called a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). One of the errors below or a combination of both errors may display on the STOP message:

  • "STOP: 0x0000007B"

  • "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE"

Your hard drive is dying or dead already. Stop using it to preserve what data is on it, and buy preferably an SSD replacement. SSD's in laptops benefit you twofold, you get better performance, and you can walk around with the laptop while its on.

I went through 2 laptop hard drives before I figured out putting the laptop to sleep and then walking to class was the culprit.

That's what I thought but I changed the hard drive and it an BSOD at the exact same time as the original hard drive during boot.

I took the harddrive out and put it into an external enclosure and it is running perfectly. But still Laptop won't boot into windows.

did you clone the old drive onto the new one? or did you re-install windows?

I was in a rush and did nothing to the drive. It had a Windows copy on it from a different laptop.

different yet identical laptop? or a completely different laptop?

Hard drives usually aren't just hot swappable like that

Completely different laptop, I know it's not supposed to work but at least it should boot?

But even without a hard drive it takes around 10 minutes to show the boot screen.

I would try and reinstall windows, or follow one of the other guides on the forum detailing how to save your windows install when you change motherboards. I think that might work.

Just cause the drive works in an external inclosure, doesn't mean it isn't dying. I would definitely get anything important off the drive while you still can. Maybe one of the boot sectors is damaged???

Thanks helped a lot. The laptop works fine now.

The hard drive is replaced and Windows has been re installed and then I updated the bios so now it starts immediately instead of waiting 10-20 minutes before booting.
