I'm currently using an iPhone 13, and it's been great, but I'd like to switch to something android based, preferably unlocked, and I'd like to be able to put a fresh install of Android on it. I'm into open-source projects like framework and am a reasonably experienced pc builder, but I don't have any experience with Android. I'd like something preferably cheaper than my current phone. I'm not a data hoarder, so 64-128 GB is acceptable, I'd like a 1080p 90hz display or better. I don't want it to be plastic or flimsy. I'll take brand recommendations, specific recommendations, or just general information about what to go for/avoid.

I'd recommend a Pixel, pretty much any of them can be bootloader unlocked (just make sure you get an unlocked one, some carrier locked one (especially Verizon) can't be bootloader unlocked) and flashed with something like GrapheneOS/CalyxOS or other custom open source ROMs.

I would avoid North American models of Samsung phones if you're interesting in custom ROMs/de-googling/etc. as they are all bootloader locked. You can import models from overseas but compatibility with US carrier LTE/5G bands is hit or miss.

why no dark mode?

welcome back from the dark side, glad to see you've had a change of heart

One of my family members had a pixel 3 xl and then a pixel 5, the pixel 3 had awful burn in after a few years.  The pixel 5 also got burnt in but to a much lesser extent than the 3.  I think he them set so that they would only sleep after a minute which caused the apps on the home screen to become part of the phone's display...  not sure about the new ones but maybe something to consider.
