Hey everyone,

Having another issue after upgrading to a new GPU, and can't figure this one out so far.

After I swapped the GPU, I did a clean Windows 11 install, and set up my computer as usual.

I usually put my computer to sleep instead of a full shut down. I can put it to sleep, but about every 3rd or 4th time I do, it looks like it's doing it, keyboard, mouse and monitors turn off, case fans stop, the power button starts to blink, but the GPU lights remain on, and it doesn't fully go into the sleep state. I usually hear a PSU click when it goes into sleep, but during these "failed" sleep attempts, it doesn't happen. The computer also won't wake up by clicking any buttons, or even a power button (it just keeps blinking). A reset button doesn't do anything either. The only way I can turn my computer back on is by holding the power button to manually shut it off, then click it again, and it boots into Windows normally.

It may be related to a GPU driver, but I can't find any other reports like this. I do have it on the last driver version, not the very latest one, because just a couple of days ago, I was having issueswith Davinci Resolve, and rolling back the driver solved it, so I'm waiting for the next release.

I also don't have the latest BIOS, and to be honest, don't really want to update it. I had a very serious issue with my Asus TUF Gaming z690 motherboard after a BIOS update a few months ago, and I had to replace a motherboard entirely to get everything back to working order, so I really don't feel like messing with that. I'm scared, lol. I'd rather just learn not to use sleep than going through that whole thing again. (I have a long thread from a few months ago here, if you're curious).

I did try different power settings, and sleep settings. I disabled Fast Boot. I tried disabling Hybrid sleep, and a few other BIOS options. So far, nothing worked.

I've seen reports from people of PCs failing to wake up from sleep, where lights will come on, but computers don't boot, and mine appears close, but not exactly the same. Mine fails to fully go into the sleep state. Anyway, I tried almost everything that was suggested (except BIOS update).

Another funny fact, I had the same issue in the past, with a different system, but a couple of components made their way into this one. That last build was based on Ryzen 9 3900x, but the current one is on i7 12700K. RAM and PSU, as well as corsair fans and the command center carrier over. Can any of those components be causing it? I didn't have any issues before I got this AMD card, so it looks like the two build that experienced this issue have one thing in common, they both had some AMD part.

To clarify:

AMD CPU + Nvidia GPU = Sleep issue.

Intel CPU + AMD GPU = Sleep issue.

But Intel CPU + Nvidia GPU = Everything works fine.

I really don't want to go back to Nvidia. I don't like anything they have to offer right now for the prices they ask.

thanks man. Other than that I would think maybe the PSU because it is supplying the GPU with power when it shouldn't have it. I don't really know I just use the shut down think and take the extra 20 seconds or just leave it on and turn off the moniters  for a bit.

I hit 700W on an i5 with a NHD15

Also I'm 14 so please just confirm anything I say with someone more experienced

And thank you for the reply!

I don't mind shutting it off at the end of the day. I usually have my computer on all day anyway, but I do use sleep if I need to step away for an hour, or two. I have a Gen 4 NVMe drive (WD sn850x), and honestly, the difference between waking from sleep and a cold boot is only about 15 seconds (I just checked, 10 vs 25 seconds). I have a habit of saving all my work and closing all applications before I put it to sleep anyway. I had an MSI B550 board paired with R9 (basically my kid's system now), and it was taking about a minute to cold boot, and that's when I started using sleep mostly. I can live with 15 extra seconds once or twice a day.

I was thinking about upgrading my PSU from my 850W Corsair to 1000W or maybe even 1200W, as I read it helps with coil whine from the video card, but it's kind of on a back burner as I'm not too bothered by that noise (fans overpower it anyway). Feels like if that's what helps people, a stronger PSU might be a healthy option regardless. I have an EVGA SuperNOVA 1000W Gold PSU in my kid's system (was mine, but I moved it there because after some years of use, its fan got kind of loud for my taste). I could try swapping them to see if it helps, but it's a pain, and I think it's easier to just start shutting down, but I'm curious if I can figure out what's causing these sleep issues too.

I have been using one to power my chip (read signature) and these things are great maybe for coil wine but like at the end of the day doesn't really matter if the system you are using doesn't need that much power and the noise isn't that bad. Really it is your money and if you really feel that's a problem you can try talking to a bunch of people and having an aneurysm during an RMA process or deal with 15 seconds being gone. I know what I would choose but it's your call as it is your PC.

@Bob__

Well, you're right. I don't want to waste too much time, or any money, on it. I was hoping that maybe there is just a setting in Windows that needs to be changed, but I can't find it, so I just changed my key assignments to lock or shut down instead of sleep from now on.

Thanks.
