General Server Build Help

Watching the VOD of the Star Trek build today, a question came up from a viewer about building a home rack mount server. Coincidentally, I have been looking into doing something in the same vein. Linus' response to the question really mirrored the frustrations I have had in looking into building a server that would meet my needs. For context I want to build a general purpose server that would have a chassis that can fit a least 12 3.5" drives for mass storage, and can accommodate standard ATX components. I found one case from rosewill that may work, but just the knowledge of what works best for what I want is difficult to find. I tried configuring a dell server with the storage I would want and the final figure was insane to me. Anyone want to point me in the right direction?

Just find a case that can physically fit 12 hdds and do whatever you need to do for them to fit in (stacking em vertically, multiple stacks, sometthing to hold them together, etc.)

 

You could also just buy a used storage server that has 12+ drive bays

A used PowerEdge R720XD or R730XD shouldn't be that expensive, but they'll draw around 175 watts at idle once they're loaded with RAM and drives. Brand new servers make no sense for home use; even commercial customers who actually need those things won't pay retail for them.

 

I was using an R730XD for a home server, but the noise and power consumption are getting to me. I'm building a replacement in a 4U Rosewill case, around an ASUS X99 motherboard. I was considering one of those "24 drive bits" Chia mining chassis (to make a "poorinator"), but that would just encourage more data hoarding!
