so if you came here you are interested in this same idea and im am wondering if it would be possible to be done... it is a round object and be hard to cover it all and let it dry without it touching things like the stuff for touchscreen devices recommend. and i also figured maybe the small glidder feet inside the ball socket would wear it off extra fast so im wondering if any of you think this would be a great idea to put on the ball of the trackball and id like to hear some thoughts and if anyone has done this and maybe how they went about doing it... i use a trackball wiht my gameing laptop as i find it the easiest and best way to game on odd surfaces that youd normaly have your laptop in (atleast i do like on my lap in bed) and beds suck for using normal mice on and dont like having a hard surface in bed wiht me so trackballs work great for this... only problem was that the ball gets oily and tends to perform poorly after a while then this idea came to mind... i have the logitech wireless m570 and it is nice but obviously not as good as a mouse but does what i need it to.

holly crap sorry for the super splurg of my horibly bad train of thought turned into text... though its not as bad as it can get >.< hope you could make it threw it all thanks ^.^

The oil is still going to end up somewhere, it'll still be slippery it just won't make a mess of the ball. So I'm not sure it'd help too well. Not to mention it'll probably wear off quite fast

However if I wanted to coat a ball with it I'd set up 2 fine bits of nylon, taught between 2 objects, then rest the ball on it and spray it and wait for it to dry.

well yeah the oil will run off but the m570 has a hole under the ball which will be nice cause it will just run off threw the hole and not stay in the socket which would basicly defeat the whole point of doing this as you stated... but thanks for the nylon idea ill have to give this a try just for practical perpuses and maybe a company could one day make a ball that has a stronger adhering oleophbic surface than what we consumers can get...

I don't think it'll quite work as good as you are hoping. If you're getting sweaty hands or something it's probably more effective to just wipe them off, but give it a go anyway, I could be wrong. I hope it does make a good improvement!

Never used a trackball but from the look of them the ball is plasticy, I think a lightly textured rubber would work really well but then it'd probably wear down :(

well it has to be a very smooth surface cause the ball has to beable to glide seemlessly over a few plastic like bumps the more friction the ball has the worse it performs as you cant move the surface enough for the optics to register it.. but yeah they need some kind of grip or something i had thought of wearing leather gloves while using it and thought that be cool kinda like wearing gloves for driving... but it feel odd.. ill try both one day when i can get around to doing another diy project... have a few on hold right now cuase im being lazy.. -.-
