Good day,

I have a Synology 1517+ and plan to ether build my own nas with unraid or if they release a 1523+ with a decent intel chip to get it.

My NAS usage mostly for VM, gaming hosting, backup and 4k transcoding with plex. (My 1517+ cannot transcode 4k in real time. I travel a lots).

Need a build with at least 6x sata connector and price no more than 1000$ without the disk drive as I will be transferring them from my current NAS to the home build. Also want something that should last me for the next 8-10 years so futures proof.

Thanks

For wider capability in hosting different things a custom build would be better.

Something like this would be far more capable then the prebuilt and should be capable for years into the future.

I still have one running at my parents with a 6700k.

But the newer cpus will be better with idle power consumption.

Depending on what os you go with, AMD might be a better choice.

For mine, the host runs windows and I have a vm running truenas scale that I pass the hard drives to for the NAS functions that way.

If you don't have plex pass no. If you do, yes. Because plex pass will allow you to use Intel quick sync with the integrated igpu. Last I see, that isn't supported with any amd cpu at this time.
