I have just got back on to my pc for the first time in a few years, it was built 10ish years ago. I think the mobo is on its way out, I cannot get sound to work or the WiFi, what would be the best upgrades for me? I know the build isn't the best, I want to get it back up and working as cheap as I can, buying a 1155 mobo is worrying me as they are old, but changing would mean new cpu and ram as well I think? What would people recommend, apart from throwing it all away and starting a fresh system(wife would murder me)

I dont have much money after buying a house, want to get back to gaming but don't want to downgrade my system, also want it to be more future proof as I will upgrade over time.

What would be a good way out of this?

New mobo 1155?

New mobo + cpu + ram + plead to wife

use pcie cards

burn it all

Budget (including currency): dependent on what's salvageable £200~ and other cheaper upgrades

Country: uk

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Hoping to start gaming again, learn how to 3d model

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Asus p8 z77v(Can't get sound+wifi to work)

i5 3570k

H100i

R9 280 sapphire dual x

Corsair 750w ax750

holy crap thats not a lot at all. Id say the game plan here is to sell the R9 280 which would be a 35-37 GBP sale, and the 3570K which would be 10-15 GBP. That would put us at 245-250 GBP, which would be barely enough for some upgrade. 3770K is around 40-45 GBP, 2x8 1600mhz kit would be 20GBP or even lower, and then a GPU upgrade which you can do with the rest of the 190-185GBP. Cross shop these candidates on used market:

  1. RX 5700XT
  2. GTX 1080Ti
  3. GTX 1070
  4. RTX 2060
  5. GTX 1660 Super
  6. RX 6600XT
  7. Quadro P4000

Try to find a second hand AM4 mobo / CPU / ram combo. Even a Ryzen 3 1200 will perform as good as the 3570, and have a lot of usable lifespan left. They can be available quite cheaply as well.

Main: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti, 16 GB 4400 MHz DDR4 Linux - Fedora

So it's not worth keeping anything I have then?

This does not help that the mobo does not have sound or wifi so I would still be running everything silent. The cpu I don't have a problem with, it runs fine.

The budget can become bigger depending on what to upgrade, atm I need to just get it working correctly.

No it is. Thats why i went for 3770K with a strong GPU combo instead of just cheap AM4 combo off the streets like what @svmlegacy suggests. About your motherboard issue though, what troubleshoots have you tried? If it is chipset damage that causes it somehow i do think itll warrant going with the latter path instead.

I was looking Into the ryzen products, I used to enjoy overclocking my 3570k and gpu, I doubt I will even bother anymore, what would be a good mobo and cpu that would be better than what I have, I don't want to spend £1000 but I also want somthing that will not bottle neck in a few months when I decide the gpu needs to go as well. £200 would be a good start, even if that just gets me a cpu or mobo and couple months down the line I can get the other.

You'll want to save up more money and get something like this. Probably plead to your S.O. on that one, because yeah that system is too old. You need a modern build just for daily tasks even.

If you can somehow convince her for you to get a whole new computer, then this is what I would recommend instead. Good luck! 🙂

The cpu and mobos come out to about £250~ and £330~

Would the ryzen 7 be alot more future proof(no likely bottle necks) over the 5? Or for my application really much diffrence? I could go for the 7, just to get me working and then gpu in a few months(once I have begged for forgiveness).

Keeping my psu would be ideal if possible?

Corsair ax750

I have been away from pc specs for so long it feels like a new place.

When building this Intel was the best, amd was only good if you didn't have a gpu. Is this still the case?

I will prob end up building a whole new system over time, as you can see I will hold on to them for a while, this one I want to be able to upgrade over the years ideally.

I remember looking into it a few years ago and couldn't get any drivers to work, any ports on the i/o to work or even the case, I worked around it by hdmi to my screen and using the headphones jack? Not sure what this means?

The WiFi issue is I lost the aerial that plugs in thats my silly fault, have just found a pcie WiFi card tho so hoping that works.

CPU: You can go with the 7 for sure. It's not that much more, so it would be worth it too.

PSU: Check the warranty. If that is up, I would recommend a new one.

I have got the system working and I can work around the WiFi and sound problems for now, what would be the best upgrade for around the £300?

The cpu has a small oc.

Do I go for new cpu or gpu?

What would be the limit for my system first? It will all change over the next year or so but trying to keep it running as I upgrade it.
