Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Sonic, Sonic, Sonic, Sonic, Sonic, and Sonic. [INSERT ANIMATION SOFTWARE HERE].

After a failed attempt at adding a new part to improve my Dell Desktop, I think it’s time for a change of pace. So, I’ve been looking in for a new laptop. I found the Microsoft Surface Pro. It has everything I need! A pen, a removable keyboard, and it seems it can run games pretty well. Unlike my Dell Desktop. So, should I buy it? And if so, what version should I pick? As long as it stays in the budget, of course!

The Surface pro can play games. But don't expect to much performance out of it. The intergrated graphics are capable. Not good. If you're willing to downscale the in-game resolution or go windowed you should have a decent enough time. Other then that. It's going to be hit or miss.

Just thought you should know. The Surface Pro Line is a really nice line of laptops that I have vastly enjoyed for work over the years.

Agreed. For certain purposes, it's fine,  but it's not a gaming machine.

I've been using computers since around 1978, started learning programming in 1980 on Apple IIs, started learning about hardware in 1990, ran a BBS from 1990-95, built my first Windows PC around 2000, taught myself malware removal starting in 2005 (also learned on Bleeping Computer), learned web dev starting in 2017, and I think I can fill a thimble with all that knowledge. 😉 I'm not an expert, which is why I keep investigating the answers that others give to try and improve my knowledge, so feel free to double-check the advice I give.

You may want to look into touch screen gaming laptops. They exist, but can be pricey.

I've also seen some intel laptops come with intel arc gpu's which should help too.

the performance of the surface pro is what it is, but they get absolutely ROASTED when you run them full tilt an extended amount of time. dont expect your $1500 device to last you 4 years.

i've got an asus zenbook flip, it's got everything you seem to be asking for, but on top of that it actually cools well. the keyboard doesnt detach, but it folds around. which IMO is better, because it creates room to space out the display, motherboard, and battery.. so that the 3 of those dont sit together happily roasting each other until something gives way.

(i've seen two beat up surfaces self-disassemble from battery swelling... and they werent even out of warranty...)

All I’m really looking for is 30 to 60 FPS. In fact, more than that makes my head spin. If it can do that, I’ll take it!

Depends on the game. I use a Surface Laptop 5 currently. Which has basically the same thermal design and the same chipset as the Surface Pro 9. It's NOT good for gaming. Like I said, games like Minecraft will run and work. It just won't be pretty. But. If you can accept 1440 x 900 resolution and settings on medium to low even something like GTA V will run solid at above 60 FPS on the i5 model with 8GB of RAM. Probably can do 30 at a bit more resolution. But don't be dissapointed. Before I switched to this one for a laptop I used the Surface Pro 5/2017 edition and before that the Surface Pro (Original One). They hold up well in my opinion for daily tasks at least. Just consider getting a 16GB version in terms of RAM because the shared VRAM of the iGPU will make the 8GB version feel a bit anemic if you want to game. That being said. For daily use I am happy with the 8GB. For everything else I just use my desktop.
