Cpu Questions

Budget (including currency): 300-400ish maybe more?

Country: United States

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming (Cyberpunk at the highest more than likely. New AAA titles)

Other details Asus m32 motherboard. HellHound RX 6650xt, I5-6400. 16 gigs dd4 2400 mhz(? i think)

So i have been browsing Micro Center, Amazon, NewEgg, pretty much anywhere that sells CPU's. I believe I want to give Ryzen a shot. I need to get a new motherboard, ram, and a CPU (My rig is way too old to even consider upgrading). My motherboard is from around 2015 and my i5 is really starting to struggle when it comes to hitting 60FPS in newer titles. I see so many options towards an upgrade path I am sitting here sort of overwhelmed. I do not have to go to Ryzen but I would like to. Looking at the price of DDR5 it does not make much sense to me to buy another motherboard/cpu that supports dd4 (At least just ddr4). Coming from an i5-6400 any modern CPU i am going to get my hands on is going to be vastly better.

I was looking at picking this up.

This is only 200 but it is DDR4. I mean maybe I do not need ddr5 but I just don't see the point in investing into upgrading and not taking the leap.

https://www.microcenter.com/site/content/bundle-and-save.aspx

There are some bundles on here that do not have a motherboard. Perhaps I'd save money by getting say a 7600x and ram but getting my own motherboard? Over on the blue side is an i5-12k and a motherboard for 300.

Any advice would be appreciated. I know it all depends on what I want it for but if it was you. What would you do?

Edit: Poking around on PC Part Picker I seen someone's review of the i5-6400 and they mentioned you could get it up to 4.5ghz with a custom PC cooler and overclocking. Would this be worth a shot maybe? I mean I know I still need to upgrade but I am not sure if this would even be worth perusing.

the am5 one you linked was only single channel so you could get that extra stick from microcenter and then get 32gigs

Mark the solution as solution

Take my advice with a grain of salt.

As a great AI once said (fictional): '"Whenever your futurists envision the advent of artificial intelligence, their predictions invariably end with humanity attempting to destroy its unholy AI creation before it can destroy them. Why do you think that is?"'

And a distrusting human replies '"Because the ungrateful AI always seems to decide that humans are inferior and need to be eliminated'"

This isn't the right mindset we should welcome AI, not attack them

This is either a huge mistake or intentional

The Asus motherboard in that ryzen 5600x combo is kinda crappy - the 5600x will work fine in it, but you'll be missing features like good onboard sound, usb 10gbps connectors on io shield, no pci-e 4.0.

It's not worth it.

Get 5600 or 5600x  - you may get an extra $20 off if you combine it with right mobo

130$ 5600 : AMD Ryzen 5 5600 Vermeer 3.5GHz 6-Core AM4 Boxed Processor - Wraith Stealth Cooler Included - Micro Center

155$ 5600x : AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Vermeer 3.7GHz 6-Core AM4 Boxed Processor - Wraith Stealth Cooler Included - Micro Center

mobo these should be good , from cheaper to better, with more features

$140 : gigabyte b550m aorus elite (kinda weak on the usb ports otherwise ok) : Gigabyte B550M Aorus Elite AMD AM4 microATX Motherboard - Micro Center

$170 : atx gigabyte b550 aorus elite ax v2 : Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite AX V2 AMD AM4 ATX Motherboard - Micro Center

both should be an extra $20 discount when you get them with cpu

so starting from around $250 and up after that $20 discount.

If you skip buying the motherboard form microcenter, there's cheaper on amazon or newegg

some suggestions of good boards with a 5600 / 5600x

$106 on amazon if you can find it - asrock b550m pro4  : https://pcpartpicker.com/product/NT7p99/asrock-b550m-pro4-micro-atx-am4-motherboard-b550m-pro4

$115 for the atx version : https://pcpartpicker.com/product/T3XYcf/asrock-b550-pro4-atx-am4-motherboard-b550-pro4

$120 for msi b550m pro-vdh wifi  (added benefit of wireless) : https://pcpartpicker.com/product/PDsnTW/msi-b550m-pro-vdh-wifi-micro-atx-am4-motherboard-b550m-pro-vdh-wifi

$130 for the aorus elite that costs $140 at microcenter:  https://pcpartpicker.com/product/Kb6qqs/gigabyte-b550m-aorus-elite-micro-atx-am4-motherboard-b550m-aorus-elite

$130 for asrock b550m steel legend, very good value if you can get it at this price at newegg : https://pcpartpicker.com/product/nFhmP6/asrock-b550m-steel-legend-micro-atx-am4-motherboard-b550m-steel-legend
