PSU advice please

Country: UK

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming; Final Fantasy, WoW, EVE, AoE 2, C&C

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Upgrading from a AM3+ platform (Biostar TA970 + FX8350), case and drives will remain. Want to make use of my new 144mhz monitor, maybe look to play some racing sims and improve my overall gaming experience. I do intend to start 3D designing for printing, but I am not sure of anything i should be aware of here, and tips would be appreciated.

I have selected these parts (https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/) as a budget option to make better use of the 1660 Super (i just picked one I have seen for the build list i don't know the exact model, it is replacing a GTX960) I will be getting later in the year and the new 144mhz monitor I have, and I want to build a new PC. I would like to add in an M.2 boot drive but want to keep my spend low. I currently have 2 SSDs and a 1TB HDD.

 

According to PPP a sub 400W PSU would be sufficient, but I don't think this is the case. Would something like a Corsair TX550M be sufficient? (https://www.ebuyer.com/1539869-corsair-tx-m-series-tx550m-550w-80-plus-gold-semi-modular-atx-power-supply-cp-9020228-uk), or it better to get the highest wattage and efficiency i can afford.

yes it would be sufficient but for some futureproofing you could go with the psu on this pcpp be quiet! System Power 10 750 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply (BN329) - PCPartPicker

Use the BB button thingy or just copy the link in pcpp (not the link on your browser) to share your partlist

 

What case btw? If its a hotbox with no airflow you are better off selling it

 

Do you already have a 1660 super? If not you are better off buying an rx 6600 as that will crush a 1660 super (equivalent to gtx 1080 performance wise)

 

 

Cant really give a psu reccomendation without the specs of the build you are planning but following what nvidia reccomends usually works fine

My R5 1600AF and RX 6600XT pull about 300W from the wall under full synthetic load, on a really bad, inefficient PSU with a bunch of other loads on it.
400W will likely be completely fine, but there aren't a lot of quality units out there. I would recommend something like a Corsair RM550x, it'll give you high efficiency almost all the way through the curve and should also allow you to get something like an RX 6700XT without breaking a sweat (unless you run an i9 13900K).

As others have noted, the link is invalid as it simply goes to users current build. So commenting on capacity is not possible, except to say that GTX 1660 Super sipped power by today's standards. Nvidia suggests a 450W PSU for systems using its base design GTX 1660 Super. Based on that, the Tier A TX550M (2021) linked in the OP should be sufficient.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Hi all thanks a lot for the feedback.

Ryzen 5 4500 (stock cooler but i was thinking about upgrading to a tower)

Gigabyte B550M DS3H mATX

Vengeance LPX 16 GB (3600 CL18)

 

I don't have the new GPU yet but I will be getting it cheaper than the used market (by a big margin). But if for some reason it was to not happen i would be looking for an RTX 2000 (or AMD equivalent/price point)

 

My case is a Fractal Define R4 I think. It's got plenty of airflow from what I can gather (2x140 in front, and again up top, 120 in the side, bottom and rear, not all are populated at the moment). Last year in the summer heatwaves playing all day i think i had brief moments where i got to 55 C on the CPU and the GPU rarely powered it's fans. I on the other hand was dying.

You shouldn't have to, unless you plan on OCing or have a really hot room/bad airflow.

For reference: a RTX 2070 should draw 250W at the very most under full synthetic load, any reasonable system with a 550W PSU can handle that.

Fans ≠ airflow, you can have a solid panel in front of them that'll keep you from drawing in fresh air

55°C while gaming is really low if your environment is at 30°C+
