i bought this computer in 2020 from bestbuy on sale as an open box used it for 3 weeks before the gpu failed, contacted support and it had already been registered, and it was out of warranty, i took the rtx 2060 apart to replace thermal paste and this is what i found!! still trying to get a hold of HP on this, i checked the price for replacement part on there website it was 917 usd$ that's crazy for the price could buy 2 rtx 3060s for that, i wonder if i can sell them the card back for the core charge, which is odd have to pay more for replacement parts if you dont send the part back that you just paid to replace!!!! MADNESS, the gaps in-between the heat pipes are the reason it failed!!!!

How did you reach this conclusion? If you mean it overheated and died, assuming thermal paste was applied correctly, no. It fills those gaps. Less efficient than a flat coldplate but the 2060 isn't a high wattage part so it shouldn't be an issue.

Hello welcome to the forums!

First off I would like to state that I am a computer technician and have done repastes on and diagnosed many GPUs in my time as one. Those gaps in between the heat pipes are normal. I highly doubt that is the specific reason why it failed, may we ask why you are sure that's what it is? Sounds to me like it's just a defective card, which is very likely since it was an open box computer, which means it was returned, and it had to have been for a reason. The fact that it was already registered under an RMA or support ticket furthers that as the most likely scenario. It's really on BestBuy for selling the computer without thorough vetting or testing, but there isn't much you can really do now that it's been 3 years since it was purchased.

Second, you're not going to be able to sell a defective GPU for full price let alone $917, you'd be lucky to get even $50 for it on Ebay as a For Parts Only card(it's really just a chuck it in the trash card now). At the time you purchased the computer they were selling 2060s for so much due to the limited amount and scalping, plus HP likes to blow prices out of proportion for stuff like that. You can buy a used 2060 that works for around the $150 to $200 range today. Hell you can get a 3090 for $800 on Ebay in really good working condition.

I'd say you're honestly better off trashing the borked 2060, then buy a used 30 series RTX card off of Ebay if you really want to get this thing up and running.

i think the pic speaks for it self hot spots on dies are what kills gpus. 6950xt, 7900xtx, cooler defects are what kill gpu dies, so yes the cooler is the reason it died! its not up for debate, been building computers for a while now, and can tell why a gpu overheated and died my friend, but thanks for your input!

Ok then, you obviously don't need or want our input or help. Good luck with it Mr. Computer Builder, it's not like you have actual technicians that specialize/have actual experience in the topic in here or anything.
