My current Rigs

 

1. CPU: 3600x

2. Mobo: Gigabyte B450M S2H

3. RAM: 16 GB 3200mhz

4. GPU: RX 6600xt

5. PSU: TX650M Corsair

6: Monitor: a) Asus VG29Q  b) LG 24MK600

7. Storage: SSD: 970EVO (51GB), Adata SU650 (256), 1TB HDD, 2 TB & 4 TB HDD (TOTAL 7 TB HDD)

8. Keyboard: Redrgon Kamura 552.

9. Mouse: Viper mini

 

Now which parts should I consider to upgrade later? Recently upgrade the GPU and then PSU.

CPU, maybe 5700X at most, the motherboard is too bare bones for a 5800X3D, not to mention too overpowered for 6600 XT.

The question is, your budget and your needs. One obvious one would be the Samsung SSD? Is that you boot drive? It seems rather old and with the low price of SSDs right now it would be a wise upgrade...

Samsung 970 Evo plus (bootable device). And I found its enough for me to use as a bootable drive. Also I dont have Gen 4 supported Mobo and CPU though.

Considering 5700x but find that the 5600x or even 5600 non x is not too far off in gaming performance.

Just update the BIOS. B350 (certain models atleast) to B550 is cross compatible with ALL ranges of Ryzen CPU.

I think as long as the 970 is below 75% capacity it probably not something I would touch. In fact, tbh with you I really wouldn't change anything from the above.

 

Is there some specific reason your thinking of upgrading: some game you want to play at higher settings or some software you want to run?

I might be experienced, but I'm human and I do make mistakes. Expand for common PC building advice, a short bio and a list of my components and other tech. I edit my messages after sending them alot, please refresh before posting your reply. Please try to be clear and specific, you'll get a better answer. Please remember to mark solutions once you have the information you need.

 

Common build advice: 1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticably improve performance past 240mm.

I'm a PhD student working in the fields of reinforcement learning and traffic control. PCs are one of my hobbies and I've built many PCs and performed upgrades on a few laptops (for myself, friends and family). My personal computers include 3 windows (10/11) machines and a TrueNAS server (and I'm looking to move to dual booting Linux Mint on my main machine in future). While I believe I have an decent amount of experience in spec’ing, building and troubleshooting computers, keep in mind I'm not an expert or a professional and I make mistakes.

I'd go this route:

- Additional RAM if you don't plan on changing the platform in a year or two.

- A 1440p high refresh monitor

- A CPU (5600, 5700X) or platform upgrade (CPU+MBO+DDR5)

- A stronger GPU

 

You forgot to mention the audio solution you're using. Headphones, microphone, IEM-s, soundcard(s) etc.

While updating the Bios would allow him to put a new CPU in, it won't make the motherboard support PCIe gen 4. So he won't be able to upgrade the storage any further.

Not really. But as you ask, I sometimes face a bit of shutter in some games like FH5. Could it be possible reason of the CPU or RAM limitation?

Open task manager while playing. If CPU usage or RAM usage is near 100% (and GPU usage isn't) while playing then you could improve performance by changing CPU or RAM. (Let me know what the usage numbers are at)

Also sometimes I found that the GPU is under utilization in certain games.

GPU usage being low sometimes just means you can turn the settings up. It's what all the components are doing that matters.

Yes, it is somewhat inaccurate, but it's good enough for what we need to learn.

Yes, but if the frame rate capped (with Vsync for example) then the GPU will just use as much as it needs and no more, which is why the CPU and other usage values matter.

i dont use anything like vsync or gsync

no.

I think it's for the less core efficiency. We know that we could still face CPU bottleneck if its not using at 100% load. I perceive that bottlenecking as my GPU is underutilized.

tbh, I kinda doubt that your CPU is limiting your GPU. You could upgrade your CPU to a 5600/5700 but I kind of doubt you'd see much improvement.

maybe a 5600, the non X version is fine. If you have a bit more budget a ryzen 7 5700 would be could. Have a look at used stuff (I look on ebay) you can usually find some great deals if you look enough.

Only changes I have made is I sold the 2060 for $235 AUD and bought a Powercolor Red Devil 6700 XT for $400 second hand (it was barely used, think I scored a deal on Ebay with that).
I'm learning video editing and trying to get some cash as a high school student.
I like F1, my favourite team is Scuderia Ferrari and favourite driver is Charles Leclerc. Favourite track is Red Bull Ring in Austria.
Playing with a 1080p 60hz monitor right now, hoping to upgrade to a 1440p 144hz one soon.

Living in AU and that pisses me off since every event is late at night or early in the morning (almost every F1 race starts around 11 PM AEST time)
