[New PC] Occasional-travel-friendly build

Just to be clear, you intend to carry the PC just as is? No disassembly-reassembly? That is very risky, you might broke a few things during transit.

Unless you drive your own car while carrying your PC, I really don't think this is a good idea. A laptop would be a safer bet.

Hello everyone, and thank you for having a look at my post. Trying to keep things short, I will be following the post guidance:

Budget (including currency): Max NTD 40000, GBP 1200, USD 1300, desired 30000/1000/1100

Country: Taiwan/UK

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Final Fantasy XIV (online), OBS (FFXIV), OBS+capture card+Switch [OBS just for reference]

Other details I am not aiming for high-res gaming, so anything above 1440/120fps is out of the scope, unless affordable. Currently I’m happy with 1080p/60fps. I would like to be able to play Final Fantasy VII remake on PS4/5 graphics [1080/60]. I have screens available in every location and I carry everything else (mic/mice/etc). No need for RGB/“gamer-ness”.

I am looking to buy a new laptop or build a semi-portable desktop. The general scope would be to game on it, with the occasional streaming and video editing. My current device allows for it, but it is starting to fail: crash/blue scree/slow-dated.

Current: MSI GE63 Raider RGB 8RE (i7-8th, gtx1060, 16gb ram DDR4 2400) base build upgraded SSD (no HDD).

My idea: if it is realistic, a micro-atx case that can fit in hand luggage (50/40/20cm - ~7kg), or straight up buy a second hand MSI trident A or X models, and swap pieces over time if the budget does not allow straight up.

I am not very versed on building computers, but here’s what I could come up with:

 - MB: MSI PRO Z790-P wifi (DDR5) - NTD 7100 / USD 230

 - RTX 3060 - NTD 10000 / USD 330

 - intel i5-13500 - NTD 8000 / USD 260

 - Micron Crucial DDR5 4800 16G(8Gx2) - NTD 1600 / USD 52

 - SSD: Kingston KC3000 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD (7000m/6000m) - NTD 3000 / USD 98

 - Case: still looking - Max 10L capacity and lightest possible (airline hand baggage limit is 10kg around here)

 - Total price [in Taiwan market/no case]: NTD 33000 (rounded up), £890, US$ 1080 (GBP/USD conversion as google)

The idea of going DDR5 is for future expansion possibilities.

Similar priced laptops would get me:

- MSI Sword  i7-12650H/ RTX4060/ 16G DDR5 / 512G SSD/ FHD 17.3 (NTD 42000/US 1375) Maybe a bit overkill

- MSI Stealth i7-1280P / RTX3060-6G / 16G DDR4 / 1T SSD / 17.3" (NTD 39000/US 1300)

- MSI Sword i5-12500H / RTX3060-6G / 16G DDR4 / 512G SSD / 15” (NTD 33000/US 1080)

I understand that a laptop would be hand-off a much easier experience, plus they are build for mobility, so should stand being carried around better, but I am not cutting my scope just yet, since tower feels more upgradeable (obviously). Like I said, I would travel with it about once a year, maximum twice, carefully carrying it with me at all times.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi, I thought this might be an interesting challenge. I picked a case that has a handle on it and is quite small and will fit into any standard luggage bag, not only that but it can totally game at the frames you want without all the RGB. The motherboard will probably have some but I'm sure you can turn it off with the RGB software that you can download.
