G'day all, i have the most absurd issue i have ever come across and after all my diagnosing, i am no closer to solving it.

I am getting rediculously low upload speeds from my computer, and it is affecting my internet browsing mostly.

the quick rundown is:

  1. computer connected to network over ethernet
  2. speedtest from computer shows download as 25mbps, upload as 0.1mbps
  3. tested in all different browsers and different speedtest servers - same result
  4. tested on another computer on same network - upload fine (8mbps)
  5. file transfer to local NAS - ~1gbps upload suggests no hardware issues
  6. this is the odd bit, i connect to vpn (PIA) on local computer and repeat speed test, upload speed now ok (8mbps) and browsing is much better. if i disconnect, it drops back down to 0.1mbps and browsing terrible

a few other things i have checked

  • DNS set statically to 8.8.8.8 (tried 1.1.1.1) - shouldn't affect speed but i checked to make sure i am not being affected by a man-in-the-middle attack
  • proxy settngs disabled
  • performed virus scan - nothing found (Malwarebytes)
  • doesn't appear to be any suspicious processes
  • all other NICs disable (except virtual adapter for PIA)
  • wireshark shows destination addresses for speed test traffic is going to correct destination
  • wireshark also shows a LOT of TCP retries on upload - which i would expect with the slow upload speed. These are not present when using PIA, although i would expect that the traffic is encapsulated inside UDP packets, so maybe that gives a hint to the cause of the issue?

Any suggestions on what to check next?

Thanks

Have you updated the driver from your manufacture? IE: Intel, Realtek etc... Not from your motherboard manufacture, but the actual chip maker.

Disconnect all devices and network cables, and unplug both router for wifi, and modem, leave unplugged for just a few minutes to completely stop the data transmissions.

Seems like you may be flooding your upload with all those retries, so give that a rest.

While your modem and router are still unplugged, go to a pc and open wireshark.

In the menubar, go to edit preference.

In the name resolution section, enable

IP network name.

I believe that enables showing website names according to the tooltip.  Should allow you to see what websites or connections are re-transmitting so much.

Try running in Windows safe mode, (without networking) and see if software on the PC might be acting funky, and test the network with other devices once you plug in the equipment again.

If that doesn't seem to help, try resetting the wireless router, if it's separate from your modem, if not, check the manual for modem setup if needed.  It should auto-configure itself, or be available to configure in a web browser, but I'd say this is a last resort.

Windows 11 will just force business to "recycle" "obscolete" hardware.  Microsoft definitely isn't bothered by this at all, and seems to want hardware produced just a few years ago to be considered obsolete.  They have also not shown any interest nor has any other company in a similar financial position, to help increase tech recycling whatsoever.  Windows 12 might be cloud-based and be a monthly or yearly fee.

Dark Reader addon for webpages.  Pick any color you want for both background and text (background and foreground page elements).  Enable the preview mode on desktop for Firefox and Chrome addon, by clicking the dark reader addon settings, Choose dev tools amd click preview mode.

NoScript or EFF's privacy badger addons can block many scripts and websites that would load and track you, possibly halving page load time!

F-droid is a place to install open-source software for android, Antennapod, RethinkDNS, Fennec which is Firefox with about:config, lots of performance and other changes available, mozilla KB has a huge database of what most of the settings do.  Most software in the repository only requires Android 5 and 6!

I recommend firewall apps (blocks apps) and dns filters (redirect all dns requests on android, to your choice of dns, even if overridden).  RethinkDNS is my pick and I set it to use pi-hole, installed inside Ubuntu/Debian, which is inside Virtualbox, until I go to a website, nothing at all connects to any other server.  I also use NextDNS.io to do the same when away from home wi-fi or even cellular!  I can even tether from cellular to any device sharing via wi-fi, and block anything with dns set to NextDNS, regardless if the device allows changing dns.  This style of network filtration is being overridden by software updates on some devices, forcing a backup dns provuder, such as google dns, when built in dns requests are not connecting.  Without a complete firewall setup, dns redirection itself is no longer always effective.
