Nvme SSD over Chipset do it affect speed ?

I think to get new SSD Samsung 980 Pro 2 TB for games and keep old Samsung 960 Evo 500 Gb for OS boot and other app. As well keep 500 Gb Sata SSD that is use only for backup files.
I have X570 motherboard it have 2 slot for Nvme one is CPU and second is Chipset. If I use that new SSD over chipset do I lose it's speed especially in future than we get games with Microsoft Direct storage support?

It'll be slightly slower because it has to talk to the chipset before talking to the CPU(rather than just talking to the CPU directly), but not slow enough to matter for most people.

What  you mean "slightly" few % or 10-20%+ ? For now I understand maybe no diference but I'm look in future than we get games with direct storage support.
Btw I heard that  Samsung 980 Pro SSD have problems that die so fast but If I'm right understand it can be fixed by frimware update ?

For direct storage, I think you would need to talk to CPU directly, although I am not sure of that. It wouldn’t be a speed or latency reason, it would be a architectural reason, direct storage may need the GPU and SSD to sit on the same PCIe bus so they can talk directly to one another. I am just not sure…

 

The performance would be negligible different tho.

Ok I switch this SSD do is good idea boot OS from SSD that run over chipset do is possible at all boot like that ? I not want do that actually due motherboard come with thermal pads for SSD I not sure if I not found it glued too SSD over all this time use.

Probably less than 10%, and not a difference you'd be able to measure unless you're doing something specialized where you absolutely need every tiny little bit of performance you can possibly get.

 

Basically it'll be slower, but not slower enough that any of us would be able to notice or measure the difference.

It’s slower, but the ssd testing is not consistent enough to usually see it. run to run variants are just too large to see meaningful difference,

 

usually it doesn't matter at all. But if you have more SSD on chipset, then it could matter.

What about if switch this SSD can I boot OS from SSD that run over chipset ? And over all if it's possible do is good idea run OS from Nvme that use chipset (If thermal pad that come with motherboard not glued too old SSD over al lthis time and I can remove it safe)

Nothing wrong with it.

 

Most M.2 SSDs by now don't need too much in the way of cooling.

Chipset is just like pcie switch.

Ok I switch that SSD to chipset slot and lose ~100mb/s speed but get increased random read IOPS about 50k do is good or bad ? I not know if higher IOPS is better or worse ? Anyway I think not worth instal OS on that SSD better install OS, Games, App on new 2TB SSD that is way faster gen 4 and conect CPU lane directly and that old keep for media and other files while sata SSD use for backup only. I not planing install hundreds games but this days game become so hungry for SSD space there is some game that take 150Gb+

Correct.  That is for the 2021 firmware version that starts with 3. GamersNexus did a video on this. Just make sure to update the firmware.

 

What happens is that the old version 3xxxx cause errors on the drive and once it reaches a specific percentage the firmware kicks the SSD permanently into read-only mode to prevent further errors.

Good question. For a typical PCIe switch it probably adds about 150ns of latency. t_transfer for 4K from SSD controller to host is on the order of 5µs, so approximately 3%, which is within reason of what I see in benchmark comparisons on my own system and drives for random 4K. It will vary from system to system. Subjectively ("feel'), this is insignificant, especially as you are not going to be pushing the right workload enough to be bottlenecked here.
