I got the MSI optix mag 274qrf-qd, and I need some help calibrating. I never really calibrated a monitor before, but I want the best out of it.

Atm I think I have HDR on, not sure if I should do that or not, and obv have the refresh rate and resolution part set up, but where/how do I tweak brightness and color? In the monitors built in controls, those are grayed out (because HDR maybe?) and in the MSI gaming intelligence, I can't even see some settings. I have like a list of pre setups, but I don't see a way to change anything outside of sharpness. However it does say here in HDR mode, some OSD settings will be hidden, is that why I can't find them?

I also could not find rtings profile, which is what alot of other posts I saw recommended.

Edit: Should I do anything in here?

One important note is each monitor would have different colour accuracy out of the box. Rtings do have user settings shown on post calibration and ICC profile you can download, but use it with caution as it may improve or worsen your accuracy.  You're better off buying or borrowing colorimeter and using Displaycal.

I would leave every settings as it is for now, except the response time should be on Fast and not fastest or else your screen would have inverse ghosting.

Ok ill switch it back to fast, as far as settings its mainly just im not sure which profile to use, theres many to use, and im also trying to figure out how the hell do I lower brightness if I even should, the brights are very bright and almost giving me a headache.

Im on sRGB mode I think right now, and HDR is on.

First off, this monitor doesn't really have any HDR capabilities other than color gamut. It isn't capable of reproducing a high-contrast image. So i'd recommend to leave HDR disabled and use it in SDR.

If you want the most accurate experience without oversaturation, you should use the sRGB picture mode for general desktop and gaming useage.

But if you like the very saturated colors this monitor can produce, just keep it in it's standard picture mode.

You cannot really improve accuracity beyond that without having a colorimenter to do a full calibration. You can only calibrate using your eyes if you have a reference display next to the display you want to calibrate.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

I found it in windows, I guess I turned it on when I set the resolution. Being off is much better, it fixed the too bright brights. Im using premium color, sRGB, image enhancement off, adaptive sync off (monitor has gsync instead), fast refresh rate.

It won't turn on when set the resolution. Possible is accidental clicking that shortcut key which is standard for Windows 10 and 11.

I don't know how it works on this particular monitor, but normally you want adaptive sync enabled, as G-Sync won't work without it. Can you still enable G-Sync in your Nvidia driver when adaptive sync is turned off?

No my bad I mean like when I went into display settings from desktop, and set the resolution, I saw the HDR button and was like oooh shiny and turned it on.

I thought I turned it on in the monitor settings, anyway it is off now.

Oh shit thank you, I didn't even realize that, I checked the control panel and yea the entire set up gsync option was gone. I turned it back on and reenabled gsync.

I've been messing around with it for a few days but I feel like im still having trouble with my darks being too dark, turning off HDR seemed to fix the brights being too bright though.

The thing is, I can't tell if I'm the problem, or the monitor is. I used cheap monitors for a long long time, where my blacks (like night mode) just look grey, and now on this monitor they are black but its almost too dark, which causes the brights to pop too much, and makes my eyes strain.

I read online somebody said too much contrast could cause it, but messing with it doesn't seem to make much difference.

I am using all the settings previously mentioned, including sRGB, but it just still feels too dark, but if I yank up the brightness im blinded by the lights worse than the weeknd.

Factory reset your monitor, turn off the HDR and also revert back to default setting on your Nvidia control panel (the Nvidia control panel setting especially not recommended to change) and see how the output.

I did all that already, HDR has been off, I'm currently using user/sRGB mode, but I might just go back to premium color/sRGB (theres 2).

Edit: wait a fucking minute I think im dumb

Edit: ok im actually dumb.... so my monitors OSD has 2 sections, gaming and professional, I thought you had to select a mode on both, I didn't realize this whole time I was switching it, not toggling both... when I was using premium color/user, I was turning off sRGB...

bruh. alright im going to factory reset the monitor again as you suggested and make sure ONLY sRGB is on.
