Budget (including currency): $500

Country: US

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Mostly AAA games

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Current Parts:

  • Monitor - 1080p 240Hz
  • MOBO - Gigabyte B450M-DS3H-WIFI
  • CPU - Ryzen 5 3600
  • GPU - XFX Merc308 6650 XT
  • MEM - Trident Z Neo 32GB (4x8GB) 3600MHz CL18
  • PSU - Apevia Prestige 600W 80+ Gold

I want to upgrade my pc but can't decide on what to do. I wanted to upgrade my CPU and Mobo to the 5800X/X3D with an ROG Strix B550 but was told it's not worth it. Right now I'm looking into upgrading to AM5 but the parts are overly expensive, hard to decide on, and it requires me to spend an extra $100+ because AM5 stupidly doesn't support DDR4 Memory. What's the best choice to go with?

If you are swapping the board may aswell just platform upgrade, 13600k + b660/760 or even a lower end z690 easily fits in your budget and you can reuse your existing ram kit

Am5 also fits in the budget with a 200$ ish b650 like the pg lightning or b650(m) aorus elite (ax) + ryzen 7700 + 6000c32 ddr5 for around 130-150$ (hynix a die so you can ride out the entire ddr5 gen due to 8000+ capability)

If you want to keep your memory, why not just keep the board too? Just update BIOS and get a 5800X3D 🙂

Forgot to do the math regarding my budget and it's significantly less now. I don't mind losing my current ram since my plan was to just upgrade the last few parts and have a second PC for someone in my family. But I was looking at getting the R5 7600 and Asus TUF B650 PLUS and just ordering the ram later since. Should I just get the 7700 since it comes with the wraith prism, a free game, and is on sale? I can probably get the ram too but the mobo will have to wait for a week or two.

Stick to AM4 I would say, get a 5800X(3D) and get a B550 I would say personally

On a B450 DS3H? If OP wanna jank a bunch of 80mm fans on their VRMs, sure. Power throttling is big concern on this damned board. 5700X is more realistic.

I don't need to keep memory since it's going to end up as being part of a pc for a family member either way. As for the mobo, mine is mATX which is a problem since it blocks some of my sata3 ports limiting me from using all of my storage devices and has a couple messed up USB ports on the rear IO.

Just flash the latest bios and install a Ryzen 7 5700X.

Alright, then I would upgrade to a new platform, as others suggested
