Hey everyone, like stater in the title- it is just a consideration that I would like some more opinions on.

I do not play a lot of graphically demanding games: Witcher 3, Diablo 3, World of Warcraft and Overwatch 2 are what I mostly play. However I am considering getting Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and when Diablo 4 and Elder Scrolls 6 comes out I will get that.

- AMD RyZen 1700x

- 16 GB DDR4 RAM (something something speed)

- AMD Vega 64 (I believe it’s called)

I can answer in more detail if there is anything I’m missing.

Essentially, is it needed to upgrade? Will it run the games I want without issue?

If an upgrade is reccomended, what do you think I should upgrade to?
I don’t need to do any 4k gaming, my eyes are not good enough for that 🙂

I think I would set my budget to probably around 1000 USD.

Thanks so much for any help!

What mainboard o you have? You might be able to upgrad to a R7 5800X3D which is a beast for gaming... when you can sill find it for a good price.

I believe it’s an MSI B450 Gaming (+) ?

i know it’s an AM4 Socket with DDR4 😄

well if it is the MSI B450 Gaming plus, you could upgrade to the 5800X3D with only a BIOS update... you would still be "stuck" with PCIe gen 3 but that should hardly matter (even with a 4090 the impact is quite small) but you would get a substantial CPU upgrade to go with a GPU upgrade now or in the future.

Yeah, I think upgrading peacemeal might be worth it, maybe just go for CPU now and a GPU down the line- for the most part I have no issues with overheating or the PC slugging through frames or anything (yet)

And even with your Vega 64 you could see a performance increase in lighter games like Overwatch, even when i upgraded from a 1800X to a 5600X when the new BIOS for my X370 board was available i had quite a jump in performance with my gtx 1080 at the time. Ryzen 1000 just wasnt that good in single threat performance...

Also, I already checked out the Ryzen 7 5700X and the 5800X3D, and the only difference I see is a higher Wattage and 65 on the cache- so as a plebeian gamer, what does the CPU cache actually do?

The difference is the cache and it makes quite a difference in games, the 5700X would be a good upgrade over the 1700X as well but to be futureproof i would go for the 5800X3D.

Here a video comparing the 5800X3D with the "normal" 5800X:

If you want to save some money go with the 5700X or the 5700 and enable PBO (basally turns the non-X in the X or close to that)
