Need reassurance!

Hello everyone!

Recently I've been in luck and am receiving a hand-me-down Pc. However there is a current issue with the graphics card where a diode is leaking within and is causing my games to crash at random. I'm in the works of getting a new graphics card but am unsure of what would work best as this pc is some years old. It currently has an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790K CPU and a GTX 980. I was curious if possibly a 3060 would be too much or hurt it in any way? I've found one for not a bad price and would like to get it but wasn't sure how the CPU would hold. I've been told it will work fine by a friend but just want to cover all my bases.

Any advice is appreciated!

Should be fine. If the used market doesn't scare you off, a 1080 or a 2060 (Super) would also be a nice upgrade / replacement for your 980. The 3060 could do with a bit more cpu power but it should still do well in your system. Keep in mind though, that you will need more than 8 GB of RAM in some more modern games. You could also shop for an AMD 6600 card if one is available in your area. As for the 980, there are so many things that can go wrong over time. There were cards that hat power leakage (not a physical leak). Unless your friend knows exactly what component is affected and you have the skills to solder in new components, getting a new card is the right decision here. You can always sell it to someone who might fix it or keep it around as an emergency card. I would assume it is fine in windows but crashed in games, most likely an issue with power delivery and those are not easy to detect unless the card shows clear burn marks.

Additionally to upgrading or getting a new graphics card, please consider replacing the thermal compound on the CPU cooler and or cleaning the case and it's fans and filters (unless you were given a clean one in the first place).

I think a 3060 would be too much for an i7 4th gen

My First PC
CPU: Ryzen 5 5600x
Cooler: Asus TUF Gaming LC240
Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix B550-f gaming
RAM: 4x8 GB Corsair Vengeance RS (3200 MHz, CL16)
Storage: 1tb Samsung 980 Pro
Graphics Card: Asus Dual RTX 2060 OC
Case: Deepcool Matrexx 50
Power Supply: Corsair RM650x
Headset: Razer Blackshark V2
Keyboard: Corsair K70 Pro Mini (Speed Silver switches)
Mouse: Razer Viper Mini
Only changes I have made is I sold the 2060 for $235 AUD and bought a Powercolor Red Devil 6700 XT for $400 second hand (it was barely used, think I scored a deal on Ebay with that).

I love Photography (Using a Canon 60D)

Love F1, my favourite team is Ferrari and my favourite driver is Leclerc

From what I've even looked up they can leak oil. Im just curious about the new GPU.

Have you actually checked the gpu or done any troubleshooting or diagnostics on the machine?

"games crashing" can be 100s of different causes. To recommend you buy hardware without checking anything would be irresponsible

I know absolutely nothing about computers. I know what I've been told and I know what I've seen pulled up from games such as Warframe that mentions hardware failure and pulls up info about different GPUs. That's why I'm asking here.

I think something like a 3060 would be way to much for that CPU, maybe spend a bit of money and get a better cpu.

Id highly recommend you do some diagnostics or troubleshooting before just buying hardware. If the issue isnt related to the hardware on the gpu then buying a new one will do nothing

That's definitely part of the plan i just cant afford it all atm. I just wasn't sure for having the 3060 for the time being until i can upgrade the next bit.

yes, I understand. If you wanna upgradde your GPU now go with it, its not like its going to damage the card.
