I have a old pc, and I have a spare HD. Should I get an enclosure for the HD or a caddy. What are the differences between them? Is it really worth it, does it improve speed or limits it?. My cd/dvd port is ATA/IDE and on the market there aren't any price reasonably caddies that uses that type of connection.

A caddy will not make your jurassic drive go any faster, just drop it somewhere in your case if there isn't a dedicated space.

A desktop PC of 2000 era vintage supports up to 4 IDE drives.  You should be able to use whatever the computer has and just mount it inside the case.

That said, external drive chassis that use IDE might be a bit harder to find now, but I'm certain you could still find them. It just won't be worth the effort.
