Hey!

I'm looking for an external SSD which will sustain large transfers without slowing down much or at all (100's of GB's at a time). Looking for 2TB and I do have USB-C and USB 3.2. Anyone have good experiences with specific products?

Thanks in advance

Intel Core i7-11700K || Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti || 1TB Corsair MP600 PRO XT & 2TB Samsung 980 Pro || Adata DDR4 3200 4x8GB || Asrock Z590-C/ac

Western Digital's performance Black series are blazingly fast and are available in external versions, with HDD and SSD variants. My 8TB HDD hits 226 mbps and @Mark Kainehas seen 240-265+ mbps with an external version, so the SSD variants should be equally impressive.

You can also try this... Works quite well, I have this setup myself. No performance data, but this M.2 is rated for 3,400 mbps, and I plan to copy a few MP3 libraries to it soon, so I can update.

ROCKETEK Aluminum Enclosure for 2230-2280 SATA / PCIe M.2 up to 2TB

Western Digital SN570 PCIe3 2280 M.2

basically outside of the connection type what slows down an SSD is heat. once they hit a particular threshold they slow down with sustained write speeds so just make sure that whatever case or option you choose is well ventilated or designed with good cooling for heat dissapation.

You can buy off the shelp plug n play but I lean towards a well designed casing and placing my own SSD. More expensive in general but far more options.

Right now I simply use a small docikng station so I can insert the SSD and I have a slower but funtional USB ssd holder so I can pull the SSD and place it in the USB holder if I want to take a couple of movies music or data with me to work or a friend.

My maximum data transfers though are not extreme.......maybe 250GB as i have a couple of times pulled items from my steam library but in general i would say under 100GB and for such amounts of data it is generally done n dusted before I have my coat on ready to go anywhere.

You could look at transfer speed but in general an SSD needs about 30 to 45 seconds to hit any threshold due to heat. 100GB for an average file size is no longer extreme these days ansd looking to the post above me it would be completed before any throttle due to heat issues.

Thanks for the suggestion, but this is just for offsite backup, so I'm looking more at a plug and play solution, like a Samsung T7or Crucial X6. Haven't owned an external SSD, just HDD's, so trying not to buy something prone to failure or that is slow

you could just purchase a simple SATA SSD from Samsung and use this, make a back up and take it with you.

I have one myself which i used a long time ago to move items from my pc as movies and music to the hifi tv etc. these days it is redundant as my home network takes care of it.
