Is it worth upgrading my system? (i7-8700K at 5GHz)

Hello LTT Community,

as the title already states, i'm thinking about upgrading my system and would like to hear your opinions.

Im currently running an Intel i7-8700K, which is watercooled and overclocked to 5.0 GHz.

I recently upgraded my GPU from a GTX 970 to a RTX 2080ti and got new RAM (16 Gigs, so 32GB in total).

I'm really happy with the system performance so far and every game i want to play runs fine at 1440p.

But as 8th gen is now quite old now, i was wondering if its still worth upgrading, even though i seem to have no real performance issues?

The only downside of my system i could think of currently is that while browsing for custom watercooling parts, i started to notice many products for LGA 115X are EOL by now.

Im very curious to hear your opinions.

You'll see an uptick in performance, as the 8700k at 5 is beat by the 9900k at 5.1 which is beat by the new gens handily.   Went thru this myself over the years.

BUT... if you're getting performance you're okay with... ride it out. I had a reason to upgrade but wouldn't have if I didn't give my machine to my kid.

8700K + 2080TI is still a damn good machine.

the 8700k should still be fine, only starts becoming a problem if you want to play battlefield games with 64 or 128 player modes at high fps but even then it should still be fine

Thats what my gut also told me, why spend a lot of money just for a newer product that does the same thing as mine. Yes, the per Core Performance of the newer gens is way better then mine, but as long as i don't need that performance i might stick with what i have.

Thanks guys for your input.

Well, the i7 8700K is comparable to a Ryzen 5 3600X, it can still do but the upgrade path is no longer a branch but a whole tree.

Hello LTT Community,

...

I would just keep it like others say. I'm in the same boat. Constantly tempted to upgrade, but my 9700K overclocked to 5ghz and 5,3ghz single cores still rocks. I also run a 1080ti which is still able to play whatever I throw at it at 1440p. As soon as yesterday I tried the highly controversial title Atomic Heart, which ran at max graphics without any issues at
~60-120fps (locked at 120)
