Right I love building computers, and modding them (painting / making parts) but when it comes to fixing a boot issue I suck, as I have never really had to deal with these sort of issues.

Right, a customer bought a system off of ebay (Yes, lets not go there), he phoned up the guy and after a while of talking, he agreed to buy it for £450 (seller needed money as he got a new baby). When he went to collect it the seller gave him everything, and I mean everything, Boxes, booklets, disc's, 2 different GPU's, even the invoice to show how much the system is actually worth, and also said if he has any issues with it or changes his mind he can return it.

Anyway lets get down to what happened.

I went to setup the system for him, redone all the cables, cleaned out the fans and installed the newest GPU and put in the RAM (only came with 2 sticks installed, other 4 in a bag). The only old thing in it is the motherboard, but has been working fine since he got it a few years ago.

Now the system turns on, gets passed the initial bios screen, and then starts loading system files (Just before loading windows, old style similar to safe mode) then it restarts, the last line I saw before it restarted was "detecting DRAM" or something like that. I restarted it, when into the bios to have a quick look at the settings, and made sure nothing was over clocked (it wasn't), so I restarted again and this time it booted into windows (looked like windows had just been installed), started detecting new hardware, also asked me to select Internet settings (Home or private) I clicked home, then said system needs to restart,, and kept restarting, then after about 3 restarts it came to system repair, I let it try and repair and it froze. Restarted it and then it got into the restarting loop again, and then loaded into what looked like Windows 7 login screen (It should go straight to desktop) but it showed the accessibly icon (bottom left) Windows 7 Home Premium (bottom center) and the shutdown/restart icon(bottom right) but everything else was black.

As I was at the customers house working on it and it was getting late I said for him to drop it round tomorrow (Wednesday) and I will look into it.

Not sure on full specs but this is what I know.

  • I7 @ 3.4Ghz
  • 24GB Corsair Vengence ram (6x 4gb)
  • Radeon HD 7870  and Radeon 57## (not installed)
  • Gigabyte Motherboard
  • Intel SSD
  • 2x Samsung HDD
  • Corsair 650 PSU
  • Windows 7 Home Premium

I will be doing the following.

  1. reinstall windows. As it managed to boot into windows once, I have a feeling it is a corrupt install.
  2. test each ram stick

Is there anything else I should check for ?

Thanks in advance for your replies. :D
