Wasn't quite sure which category this goes in, copied the template from the new build section. I am new here and not very good with hardware so please have patience with me.

Budget (including currency): low as possible, Swedish Krona (SEK)

Country: Sweden

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: data-recovery, data-erasure, hard drive cloning, casual gaming (GTAO, Ace Combat, Satisfactory).

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):聽
cpu: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2 GHz Quad-Core
cpu cooler: Scythe Katana 5 48.878 CFM CPU Cooler
mobo: Asus Z170-K ATX LGA1151
ram: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) DDR4-2133 CL13
gpu: Asus MATRIX-GTX980TI-P-6GD5-GAMING GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6 GB
case: Cooler Master Elite 430 ATX Mid Tower Case (probably), noctua fans
psu: Fractal Design Integra M 750 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX

So, I am thinking of upgrading my build from 2016. It pretty much does most things I want it to do, but in changing from win 7 to win 11 I lost most of the USB ports, and I'd like M.2 boot storage. So I have a few questions..

First I would need to swap the mobo, I am thinking one with the latest standards so that I can upgrade it more in the future. I am for the most part pretty happy with the performance, how many of the current components would I have to swap, and how much would I expect to have to pay for parts that fits a modern mobo that gives similar performance to this? I am on a very limited budget so trying to save me pennies 馃檪

A modern motherboard will give you the exact same performance as the one you have.

Is there a reason you need Win 11?聽 Drop to Win 10 and enjoy a good OS with all the stuff on your current mobo.聽聽

M.2 boot storage isn't any better than SATA boot storage, in real world use.

I wouldn't upgrade until you're going to do a full CPU/RAM/Motherboard swap.

I am curious how you lost USB ports with Win 11 tho.

So just pop in a SATA SSD?

Choose Windows 11 as I'm a bit concerned with MS keep killing of their OS (been running Linux primarily since they killed off Win 7), but I'll take your advice! Thank you!

Also so far Win 11 has been among the worst OS I've ever used so I'm glad to get away from it.

I am also curious!

Microsoft has promised through at least 2025, and given the adoption rate of Windows 11 I would genuinely be surprised if it's not pushed back at least another year or two like Windows 7 was.聽

Yes, SATA SSD's perform roughly the same as high end NVMe SSD's in 99.9999% of machines due to the workload most people use.聽 The way files are handled in Windows and games and web browsing, etc are the same.聽

Gamers specifically don't benefit.聽 It's why I had no issue with using SATA drives in my previous machine I just gave to my kid.聽聽

Win10 as above mentioned is good til 2025, and I agree that it may be renewed longer as Win11 isn't being adopted much yet.

Now, if you happen to have a little cash ($275), we can spec out a new CPU/RAM/Motherboard for you. That 6500 is getting a bit old 馃檪
