What to do with overkill GPU ?

Protomesh

I bought 6900XT a while ago but I only play CPU heavy games with low graphic settings (I prefer low graphics so I don't really want to crank my settings to max, and even then it wouldn't add much utilization)

My GPU utilization is less than 10% so I am wondering what I should use my GPU for ?

I want the card to last me at least 10 years so mining crypto is out of the window. I already undervolted too to add longevity and cut power consumption.

I don't do any productivity work either. I'm kinda lost with my purchase. I don't mind too much but wondering if people here have any suggestions as to what I should do with it to kinda justify the purchase ?

First world problems I know.

Run games in 4k high settings

Download and play with Blender

Try your hand at video editing

Or trade with me and keep running low settings

If you have no other uses, and I you actually want to use it for 10 years, then I suppose you should just use it as you do now. In about 5 years, updates to the games you play will probably see that utilization rise to fairly high levels. By the 10 year mark, I'm sure the 6900XT will look like the R9 290 does today: about on par with a low-end card like the GTX 1650 with no support for new drivers.

I also don't have a 4k monitor and don't plan on buying one.

High quality graphics distract from the important aspects of the game. It's a visual overload and to me and the games unironically look uglier to me at higher settings.

I just got tired of my 1060 not being able to run any games. Overwatch keeps dropping below 100 fps and even League of Legends that super easy to run is dropping below 50 fps on my 1060.

Even games built on mobile, like Tower of Fantasy drop below 20 fps.

So yeah I guess in the heat of the moment in pure frustration I just wanted the best of the best available at the time of purchase.

Get a really high refresh panel, and game at high FPS.

The way you're using it now, it will easily last 7-10 years, just make sure you clean the dust out of it frequently.

Interesting.  I'm having trouble wrapping my head around it, but we've all done foolish things.

Your logic is flawed here:

I want the card to last me at least 10 years so mining crypto is out of the window. I already undervolted too to add longevity and cut power consumption."

Mining doesn't kill cards as a rule.  No reason it won't last 10 years if you mine on it.  My 1080Ti is still rocking after mining Bitcoin to pay for itself, and I expect it'll do another 5 years.

I seriously say you should sell it, get a much cheaper card that will serve you for your actual needs, and then in 5 years replace it.  $200 now, plus $300 in 5 years is $500 over 10 years.  How much did you pay for that 6900XT?  Minimum $600 (and up to $1200), and they're going for $800+ now.

If money isn't an issue, then just use it.  It's a GPU.  Enjoy it.

The issue is even if I get 500Hz+ monitor, I won't be getting 500 frames in any game lol. Even in the easy to run games I'll just run into poor game optimization or CPU bottleneck before reaching those numbers.

Selling it isn't an option since used market sucks and no one will pay more than 50% of its value and then I couldn't even afford to buy a downgraded card new.

The more I work on impulse control, the more impulsive I get. I plan my purchases for several months in advance, but one day something just clicks and all that planning goes to waste.

Yeah, that's just planning.  That's not impulse control working 🙂  Impulse control is initiating a sequence of events between the want and the doing.   Like starting out counting to 5, then making it to 6, then 7 over time.

We all got those issues tho!  I've got 2 Microcenters here, I don't know how I'm not poorer!
