Long story short-ish,

Upgraded from 3080 to 4090, changed nothing else. Booted up, got into Windows, then black screen. Tried that a few times, booted into Safe Mode, uninstalled driver, back into regular mode, installed driver, black screen or froze… did that like 5 times.
Then formatted c drive, installed Windows, updates, drivers, then Nvidia driver, black screen… same story.
Tried my friends pci-e extender, same again (both Asus 4.0 16x cables).
Now the card is directly in the pci slot, and seems to work fine, did several 3DMark runs, including OC, all passed.

I really want the card mounted vertically, so anyone who knows a fix?

KNOW? no.  Just look for a really high quality riser cable and try it if it’s actually the riser cable.  Any such card would need to vertical mount if you’ve got 16 lanes actually free you could use pcie 3 though without bandwidth restriction. Even a 4090 can’t saturate 16 lanes of pcie3

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Does anything change if you configure the slot to PCIe 3.0 in the BIOS

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

I know that some boards have issues with some riser cables. Sometimes they patch it with BIOS updates but often times you need to find a different cable to get it to work. I've used a Thermal Grizzy 4.0 Riser cable in a friends computer for a 3090 Ti. I have no experience with 4000 series cards but would assume they need high quality cables as well.

On a side note, those tubes look like they are missing some clamps.

.high quality and a price to match is the only sure way to be 100% sure outside of pure good luck. that is a personal opinion. as in all things lot of offers on the market and lots of crap and cables competing at low price that almost never meet the specs that they tout.

As the 4090 in all probability prevents you from using more slots have you got the space to use a pcie 90 degree adapter? those I have found to be more reliable as there is not cable as such more a socket with direct connection. no idea if it will accommodate tyour needs but i have one in my wifes PC as she liked the colours from the rgb on the water block the GPU is fitted with. Just a pain if she ever needs an M.2 replacemet as I will have to remove the gpu tp get to it

I had hope the Asus cables were high enough quality, think I will try the EK solution in that case. Could try 3.0, but I guess it shouldn’t really be necessary.

BIOS in up to date, but will keep an eye out. Had hoped the Asus cables were top quality, but guess not. I will look for the Thermal Grisly cable, or the EK solution.

Hehe yes, only temporary to see if the card worked. I am running hardline tubing, and didn’t want to make new tubes for the temporary solution if it didn’t worked.

The feeling of the Asus cables seemed good, but apparently not the case for the internals. Also quite expensive too…
I have never heard of those before, but I will look for one, if no good cable turns up. Have to uninstall the GPU anyway in that case, there is no room for working behind the card.

Makes sense but please add at least some cable ties. As for the Riser cable, the one for the O11 is supposed to be pretty good as well. The issue with Riser cables on the 4000 series cards is, as far as I understand it, that the cards run much closer to the limit of the PCI-e spec. Previous cards were fine on most decent Riser cables. I have yet to work on a 4000 series card but it is known that people have problems with their 3.0 Riser cables and even some 4.0 cables.

Cool, I guess there is nothing else to it then. I will see what I can find in stock and buy a better one.

I will return with the result, but might take some time.

I used something similar to this but i am in china and here it was easy to just go into a giant PC Mall . they unpacked it plugged it into a board wiith GPU and let me see it working before purchase. I do not own a 40 series but it works fine on the 3080 cards. plus as I mentioned there is no cable as such so for me that was great as I had already wasted money on two different PCI cables where one worked for maybe a week the other which i was stupid enough to buy online never ever worked. One was i think about 85 dollars converted from RMB the other was a special offer and the special was that it was junk. my own fault really...anyways good luck and I hope you find a solution that does not cost an horrendous price.

for PCI Express X8 Left Slot 90-degree Riser Right-angle Adapter Card ...
