I'm thinking about buliding a home server out of my first battlestations in about 2 years or when I start going to university as a Computer Science and Engineering Major. I'm just wondering what I'll need for my server in that time. I'm not really worried about spending a whole lot of money as long as I don't need to replace my server in a long time i.e. 10 maybe 15 years or when the CPU/Motherboard dies. FIY, I'm moving towards more of a minimalist livestyle where all I really need is a laptop and not really a battlestation. The server is there to archive and backup my files because I basically do a complete reinstall of my OS on my battlestation ever year and I hate backing it up and reinstalling everything. Plus I kinda want my home to be "smart" my way and the server can be their as a central computer that can controll everything, hopefully.

Specs:

  • CPU
    Intel Core I7 2700k Overclocked 4.5 Ghz
  • Motherboard
    Asus P8Z68 V-Pro/Gen 3
  • RAM
    Mushkin 2x4 GB 1333 Mhz 9-9-9-24 CL9
  • Case
    Bitfenix Shinobi Black Window
  • Storage
128 GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD + 1 TB 7200.11 RPM Seagate HDD
  • PSU
XFX Pro 750W Black Edition Single Rail Full Modular 12V 70A 24PIN ATX PSU 80+ Gold Cert
  • Cooling
(CPU) Hyper 212 Evo, (CPU Fan) Corsair SP120 Quiet Edition, (Case Fans) Bitfenix Spectre 120mm
I'm pretty sure that I'm good with specs especially the CPU and proberly RAM. I'll just add more HHDs in a Norco case or even a home made from 3D printing. I'll be running a linux based OS proberly Redhat or Ubuntu Server on a SSD.
What else do I need? All I'm really using this is just as a backup, archive media and other personal data, streaming video and maybe a smarthome server. I want the server to be slight more capable than this so I have enough room to grow into the next decade. Thanks.

Well, if you want to save money with cheap technology, I'd wait for the Haswell Refresh. It will feature the Pentium 20th Anniversary edition. It is unlocked, so it can do better than an i3. Also will feature newer technology, like SATA Express and M.2 slots. Plus, a Pentium would put out less heat than a power hungry i7.

I would suggest this amazing server motherboard: ASRock C2550d4i. Or it's big brother (completely relative), the 8 core version, the ASRock C2750d4i. Although the $120 price increase for 4 more cores is kind of terrible imo.

Throw that bad boy in a Fractal Node 304 (has 6 internal 3.5" drive bays) with an ATX PSU (since it supports it) like a Seasonic SS-400FL2 (fully modular) and you'll have space, efficiency, and power at a pretty good price.

Whoa, those motherboards look a bit overkill.

Very low power consumption even under load  ;) Atom CPUs are veeery efficient.

Yeah, but add in 8 cores and report back to me what happens.

The power usage goes up 20w?

Still, my Q6600 churns out less pwr than that.
