Upgrade old system or start from scratch?

Hey, So I looking at upgrading the GPU on my current system to play games smoothly at 1440p mostly, though wondering if there is any point with the CPU likely to bottleneck most cards that I could throw at it. 

Is there any point at maybe trying to pick up a used 9900k to put in there as it would be way better at handling newer cards or would I be better just to start at scratch at that point and build a new system?

Thoughts?

Unless you get an amazing deal on the i9 9900k I’d probably just start from scratch. Even then, I’d still probably start from scratch.

The 8600K would bottleneck any card significantly stronger than the 1070Ti you already have. Consider it a Ryzen 3500X.

An i7 8700K would do better, like a Ryzen 3600X. But not a lot better.

The i9 9900K should be considered on pair or stronger than a Ryzen 7 3800X, maybe close to the 5700X. That would do.

But with the prices of a used i9 9900K, you're better building a whole new platform (CPU+MBO if you're keeping the RAM).

I' m also on the fence about this. Recently asked for a GPU upgrade here, seems like starting from scratch seems more reasonable to me.

Just one component a month.. need to save up. Hopefully have it by the end of this year haha

I sometimes wonder how we went to space on only 4KB RAM, and we cannot fix a simple issue.

If all you were interested in was Blender or Tarkov performance, then I'd be telling you to upgrade your CPU but as I still have a gaming PC on an 8700k I decided to see how Cyberpunk played. I can confirm that the 8700k @ 5Ghz paired with a 1080ti on the high pre-set setting averaged 60fps on the nose at 1440p. I then benched it on my 8086k @ 5.1Ghz which is paired with a 2080ti at the same resolution and settings and got that up to 75fps.

 

An 8700k will certainly become the bottleneck if you're trying to push high fps at lower resolutions (1080p) but since games like Cyberpunk and GTA are more eye candy couch / lazy gaming experiences then 60fps is a perfect target that even a modest upgrade for your GPU could handle.

 

Since I'm in the same boat as yourself, I'm happy with my 8700k, 8086k and 9900k and am yet to feel a great need to upgrade any of my CPUs. My advice would be to spend your cash on the GPU.
