purchased last year with a CPU from April 2012 ??? almost 13 years old already.

for starters just unistall anything you do not use would be the best start. Check your system for apps that run in the background and disable anything you do not need.

lots of online articles that give information and advice on what can be safely removed or disabled.

you simply have to reduce the load on your CPU and Graphics as your system is probably getting overwhelmed whe you launch a game.

Okay thank, but maybe you can help me with that?

That computer's a decade old. A modern graphics card will only help so much.

Are you running games off that slow WD Green mechanical hard drive? All the system tweaks in the world won't make a difference if the PC has to sit around waiting for the hard drive to load the game assets it needs.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

to start let us know what OS you are running ? windows 10 11 or older/

then you need to look on the web for articles similar to these links

https://www.techrepublic.com/article/10-ways-to-speed-up-windows-7/

https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/windows-10-faster-performance/  Basic but useful

or if you are reasonably confident you know what you are doing check out the older versions of Black Vipers work. in the past he delivered some excellent tweaks to help users on windows. the link is to a forum as I think you might need to read about it first rather than just jump in and possibly load a Black Viper preset that messes things up if you have no idea what you are doing.

that said, just take your time read thru some forum info as many of the presets from people as BV are excellent resources and can reduce the amount of resources that eat your cpu cycles allowing for more flexibility and a speedier more fluid response with your PC

in all honesty though your PC at its age right now will never give a top performance but it should run older games from the period pretty much ok if the system is healthy.

we also have no idea what else you have on the system. ?

you said it was a prebuilt so possibly you have so much junk and bloatware installed even a much faster CPU would be screaming for help. just look patiently and be methodical in your search of what is on your PC. if you have lots of apps from the maker of the PC switch them off or delete in many cases. just be aware that anything that looks like system files leave them alone. Older prebuilt were commonly using a ghost backup on your drive but as you have the system on an SSD I have no idea if that was original or added later.

either way just go slow and look. anything you are unsure of just copy the filename and post into google or other search engine to get back a result about what it is and if it can be removed etc...then just rinse repeat till the system is lean mean and hopefully runs a game or two without too many issues.

Also as mentioned in a post above...games running from a hard drive were fine 12 years ago. anything today demands a higher speed access or it is going to be unbearably slow loading and can stutter if accessing a mechanical drive rather than the far superior speed of an SSD

Defining 'help' here would also be useful. Are you willing to spend money on upgrades, or are you limited to just doing what you can with this hardware?

If upgrades are on the table, definately get a larger ssd. The old i7 will last for a little longer assuming you keep it to older games and settings, and a 1660 is fine for midrange settings. Swapping the WD HDD for a sata ssd would probably help a lot with game loading and asset load stutters.

On the other side, you may want to try a clean install of windows if misc. programs and clutter is slowing down your windows install. Your screenshot also shows the 1660 is reporting 2047mb (2gb) of vram. A 1660 should have 6gb of vram, not 2, so something is wrong there. You should try updating all video drivers, or DDU uninstalling the existing and reinstalling from the latest Nvidia set.

I have a very similar system, basically the same CPU with different names.  I also use ddr3 memory.

I also noticed the DDR3 ram running at a low frequency.  In fact, it's running 120 mhz slower than the minimum that I can set my ram to.  In my sig, I show that I'm running down-clocked ram.  My UEFI only lets me use 800Mhz as the lowest.

So either, you could have some very slow ram, running at 686 mhz, and I doubt a pre-built anything has an memory frequency options.

Windows 11 will just force business to "recycle" "obscolete" hardware.  Microsoft definitely isn't bothered by this at all, and seems to want hardware produced just a few years ago to be considered obsolete.  They have also not shown any interest nor has any other company in a similar financial position, to help increase tech recycling whatsoever.  Windows 12 might be cloud-based and be a monthly or yearly fee.

F-droid is a place to install open-source software for android, Antennapod, RethinkDNS, Fennec which is Firefox with about:config, lots of performance and other changes available, mozilla KB has a huge database of what most of the settings do.  Most software in the repository only requires Android 5 and 6!

I recommend firewall apps (blocks apps) and dns filters (redirect all dns requests on android, to your choice of dns, even if overridden).  RethinkDNS is my pick and I set it to use pi-hole, installed inside Ubuntu/Debian, which is inside Virtualbox, until I go to a website, nothing at all connects to any other server.  I also use NextDNS.io to do the same when away from home wi-fi or even cellular!  I can even tether from cellular to any device sharing via wi-fi, and block anything with dns set to NextDNS, regardless if the device allows changing dns.  This style of network filtration is being overridden by software updates on some devices, forcing a backup dns provuder, such as google dns, when built in dns requests are not connecting.  Without a complete firewall setup, dns redirection itself is no longer always effective.
