Help identifying HDD noise?

Go to solution Solved by OddOod,

Welcome to the forums!

It sounds pretty normal, but I'd use crystal disk info to just double check. Regardless there should be a pretty solid warranty on them and if they do fail you can get new ones no problem. As always, 3-2-1 backups

Hey all,

I'm new to the forums, so if this post isn't allowed please feel free to delete it.

I recently bought some Seagate IronWolf Pro drives for my server, but they're making a concerning(?) noise when performing reads/writes. Here's a link to a Youtube video where you can hear it. It's almost crunchy sounding.

Can anyone tell me if this indicates drive problems? Or is this normal noise for reads/writes? Just need to know if I should start the refund process.

Thanks a bunch in advance.

That sounds normal to me. Have you checked the S.M.A.R.T. info with a tool like CrystalDiskInfo (as mentioned by @OddOod) or something similar?

Thank you both for the help. It's very reassuring to hear that it sounds normal.

To answer your question, yes! I ran a short test on both drives, and they both showed no errors. I think I'll copy over the data from my previous drive as a "stress test", then perform a long S.M.A.R.T. test on both drives just to be sure.

TBH I just took possession of 12 refurb 14TB Seagate Exos X16's (don't @ me, they were 150$) and I was HELLA concerned about the noises, but then I remembered that the last drives I actually handled while they were live were 4TB drives and that was 5 years ago. I think these boys are just getting louder as we push ever closer to the limit of spinning rust.
For the record, I dropped each into a test bench and discovered 11 had 2 power on events and under 24hrs of use, while the 12th had 90 hours and 5 power cycles. *very* happy with my purchase.
