Want: I want to build a high performance home NAS(~300mps up and down)/ virtural machine server.

virtural machines: windows home server, to forward incoming remote desktop connections from the internet to the correct computer, want a home router (clear os or freebsd) w/ firewall. and a storage manager. so that I can install my programs games ect. to the network storage. Idk if I use something linex based for the storage or windows home server.

What i have:

$700 (to spend on what ever is needed)

old lga 775 stuff:

a core 2 quad (oc 3.5 limited by chipset), pentium duel core (can oc to 4.2ghz), pentium 4 3ghz( never tried oc)

1 775 motherboard (only compadable with p4)

6 2gig stick ddr2 ram

1 case ready to go

I would like the home router to be in a seperate computer (planning on the hp pentium 4)

My gaming pc evga p67 ftw 2600k 5.2 (W.C.) w/ 2gtx 470 @750 core (W.C.)

2x segate 1tb (blank drives) 120gb force gt .(boot) 500gb western digital laptop drive (stores games`n stuff)

I know I will probobly need 10 gigabyte eathernet to get the speeds I need want

I can get a 1155 pentium duel core from microcenter for 30$

I want to have a hardware raid level raid setup

Im looking for recomendations of where to go from here.

thanks in advance If you need more details or pictures plz post ill msg back

Use the core 2 quad. How much storage space do you need? And how many drives are you using (SSD or HDD) And for the network side of things get a managed switch with a quad gigabit card for both machines, i guess you have gigabit already on the mobo so then it will support link aggregation so you have a 5 gigabit connection. ( should be good enough )

I think with the hardware you have it would be ok, Use the Core 2 Quad maybe 4Gbs of memory MINIMUM for the speeds you want, If you are using a raid controller and say 4 1TB Hard Drives I think that may work fine, Also for the network the cards you are thinking of buying will work, just make sure that your board has enough available slots for the 3 cards you are planning on buying and for the raid card as well, one more thing, make sure your powersupply can handle it, as for the 3 cards, If you aggregated them for say 3 ports to do upload and 3 ports to do download, I think that will increase speed but you should try it aggregated with all 6 ports ( assuming you buy the 3 cards ) as one connection,

If you are looking to buy parts you can look at Tigerdirect.com/.ca or Newegg.com/ca or NCIX.com/.ca These are all trusted E-Tailers and do offer great customer support.

When you get a raid setup you will want to think about what raid you want to use, 1, 0, 10, 6, there are many many different ones, 0 will give you plenty of speed but NO data loss tolerance, raid 1 need a minimum of 2 drives because it will copy data to each drive and there you have redundancy if 1 drive failed, for raid 10 it is 1 and 0 combined, for raid 6 it is similar to raid 1 but you can lose more drives in the array, but data isn't written twice so it is actually quite different in that sense.

If you have any questions just ask,

Hope I helped.
